well my car failed its mot

corroded brake pipes and a worn CV joint housing

that and they found a paticularly nasty problem that aint on the MOT test

there was a leak in my cooling system, only started in the last couple of days but from yesterday to today its lost at least 2ltrs of water/anti-freeze

ah well its being worked on now, but oddly the emissions reading was one of the best he had all day

when he was revving the nuts off my engine to test the emissions there was no smoke or owt and diesel engines usually smoke (no additives int he fuel or owt)

so im a happy-ish bunny, gettign my car sorted but i am now totally skint

    /me puts out begging bowl

whats the worst that your motors ahve failed on?

    show off

na im pretty damn lucky as the car was gonna do along motorway trip tomorrow

long motorway trip and leak bad enough to loose 2ltrs of water in 24hrs is not good (i honestly didnt know as the road was wet anyway so couldent see and the temperature needed wasent going up anymore than usual)

lucky you, we've had to pay insurance, tax and have an MOT this month, which it failed - there were 4 tiny holes in the exhaust - not a problem for another few months really, but it failed the emissions test because of it, also new brake pads all round and the one problem we knew about - a dead brake light....

    insurance - £90/mo
    tax - £165
    MOT - £272

= £525 and thats just this month....

Mine failed on a front headlight bulb once. Total cost, something like 68p (plus £10 for MOT).

they're that thorough of checking on your cars?

damn.... I can't even fail my truck for anything (thankfully CT goes by age of block, not chasis like MA)

    every year

you get this lot checked http://www.rac.co.uk/carcare/advice/general_help/mot_checklist and the emissions of that engine are accceptable

because without a valid MOT and insurance you cant get road tax and without road tax it is illegal to drive

tbh i would perfer the MOT to be a bit more stringent

my last car failed it MOT in January on emissions

CO2 was about 10 times over the limit. Whole exhaust and cat later took it back to re-test. Failed again and again and again. Finally on about the 4th attempt it scraped the CO2 emissions by about 0.01%
Got no idea why it was that bad, had a new lamba sensor fitted too.

cost me around £200 for that failure. My new car has just had its MOT so thats over for another year, paid £80 tax for 6 months.

I've started doing as much work for the MOT as possible myself as I am sick and tired or forking out x hundred pounds.

Changed the front discs and pads on my gfs Renault 19 the other week. Only cost me £40 for the lot and I got Brembo discs as well.

German, Swedish and Frence Carparts rock.

My spider failed on the horn, and the headlights were too low.. honestly, I can't understand why the garage wouldn't just turn the nice easy green dial at the back of the headlights unit to adjust the height.

Passed now though, fixed both problems myself ;)

Christ are you loaded or just like buying all the expensive parts and getting some ****** in a boiler suit to overcharge you???

exhaust should have been no more than £100 and pads about £20 i would suggest you have a look around next time for a trade supplyer and buy the bits off of them and then try to get a more competitve quote or fit them yourself.

Not MOT but my car is in the garage because the cambelt broke :wallbash:

If its an interference type engine it will probably cost >£1000 to fix.

Anyone know if a 99 Renault Scenic 2litre is non interference? I'm hopping it is!

man that seems expensive for all but the MOT itself.

i'm guessing the holes were either on the midsection or the rear can itself of the exhaust.

again though try a trade supplier next time because i could've got most of that for about £80.

i got a set of drilled and grooved front discs and pads for my Golf GTi for £25
canna argue with prices like that.

I live in a real rural area out in the country, and my county doesn't do emissions checks for inspections. The guy basically says, "Ok, your lights work, you pass."

    that sounds about normal

I bought brake discs and pads for £40ish
I paid £150 for a whole exhaust and cat
    my MOT was that price

But i paid nowt for labour, as i know who a guy who can do all that himself. So just bought the stuff and he fitted it.

I recently had to get some exhaust work done, got new pipes, a cat, and a glasspack for $90 at this shop here in EL Paso.
