This isnt really electronics related, but i was considering doing some sort of electronics course at university and i wanted to know wether anyone would recommend it as a good course // possibly a career as an electronics engineer.
    Thanks Mark

I typed this once but lost it because of a timeout request, so I'll just give you the short of it.

The whole field is fairly diverse, so you have many options to specialize in. I don't know how the program works wherever you are thinking about going but here they make you sample several different areas so you can decide what you enjoy doing. There is a fair amount of learning to be done and I won't tell you that's it's not fairly hard, but it's not fairly easy either. What ever you decide though, you won't know if it's for you unless you sample it. I'd also suggest you talk to some students in that field at the school you're thinking of attending and get a feeling of what they think.

A few things to think about first,

It's very mathmatical. Not the same as pure maths is but you'll find it rather difficult if you don't get on well with the maths.

If you like programming and are hard working then look at software engineering (think that's what it's called, comp + elec basically) Will provide you with more job options and make you very employable. I enjoy the digital and microprocessor side of electronics so a good programming background was helpfull (I did programming in 1st + 2nd yr) but I just dont work hard enough to do software eng.

My course has given me a very wide sample of electronics and even now at the end of 3rd yr I'm not sure what I'll specialise in. Except staying well clear of analogue :)

Whatever course you do make sure you work steadily over the year to avoid the ultra stressfull time at the end of the yr that I'm going through jsut now :hip:

Hope that's of some help, pls quiz me more if u wish.

edit: forgot to say, it's an excellent course if you enjoy messing around with and dismantling electronic stuff (so you can put them back together again) Seriously tho, I enjoy it and think it's probably about the only subject that I would have stuck at this far at uni.

programming lecturers are boring as ****.

I can't understate how boring a programming lecture is.

Algorythms is often intresting, but still its like watching paint dry.

Electronics is often insperational, but the maths can get very tiresom.

But AI, AI lecturers are very good, maby its just cuas thats what the uni i am at excells at, but we have a lot of people who ain't on the course sitting in the lectures (Phillosophy students etc.).

Cybernetics on the whole i like, because i get to do the programming i get go marks in, but do the electronics / building robots i love.

However its often tiresome in the mainlab when someones ultrasound goes nuts, and a 7dwarf ends up humping ur stool whilst ur trying to work.

Most of the colleges I know don't offer summer electronic classes, only programming ones. The more I think about it, I don't know of any colleges that offer summer electronics. I think it has something to do with having to pay the profs more to hold summer session, while on the other hand it's easy and cheap to get a grad student to teach a programming course (they don't trust grad students to teach electronics courses).

Just to put it out there, I'm finishing my 5th year as a Computer Engineer (the same as an Electrical Engineer but with more emphasis on programming and less on power systems) so feel free to ask me any questions.

I know of some in the UK but the funding is for europain peeple only and it would cost you about £1,000 for 2 weeks, which its not really worth it.
