    OK here's the situation.

Just done a fresh install of Windows XP Pro on my other machine.

The problem is that I can't get it to see the rest of the network. First of all I couldn't access websites but I realised it's a problem with the computer's networking settings/hardware as I can't ping local IP addresses (such as my router, 10.0.0.2).

Typing 'ipconfig' in DOS brings this up:

    "Windows IP Configuration"

    and nothing else.

I've tried doing a release and renew but nothing happens.

Any ideas? I can post more info if needed.

If IPCONFIG doesn't bring up anything other than "Windows IP configuration" the either:

    1. Windows isn't aware of the network card, or
    2. TCP/IP isn't bound to the network card

1 is more likely. Have a look in Device Manager and see whether it's listed. If it's got an exclamation mark, it's probably in need of some drivers. If it's not listed, shut the machine down and shift it to a different PCI slot, then reboot and see.

If it's 2 then you just need to open the properties of the network connection and put a tick in the "TCP/IP" box for the connection. You'll probably want File and Printer Sharing, and Client For Microsoft Networks too :)
