I need some help to set up a small network. There are 2 computers in it and 1 modem.

Is it possible to have it like Internet -- Modem -- Computer 1 -- Computer 2? Or do i need a switch/router?

Computer 1 is running windows XP and computer 2 is running windows ME.

What settings shall i have? IP, gateway, dns and all that..

you can do that. what sort of modem is it broadband (usb/rj45) or dial up?

plug in both network cards in stall drivers and switch on internet conection sharing and dont forget to use a crossover cable

I assume you are using dial-up or similar in which case.
    1) Enable Internet connection sharing on the dial-up properties for your connection (right click properties on it, its in there somewhere)
    2) Set IP on machine 1, something like: 192.168.0.1
    3) Set ip on machine 2, something like: 192.168.0.2
    4) Set gateway on machine 2 to the IP of machine 1
    5) Set DNS to DNS of your ISP on machine 2 (you should be able to get this info from your ISP)

you will probably need to reboot the ME machine and it may ask for your CD. but thats really about it and that has pretty much always worked for me.. ooh yeah.. and if you are doing machine to machine dont forget you need an x-over cable anyhow
