Wallpaper looks a bit crappy due to compression; the gradients didn't come out too well.

AceFTP and HL2 shortcuts with that background make for some good laughs. :hehe:

j4ck, is it a JPEG? Did you try perhaps a BMP or PNG with no compression?

toidiochysp, Greg Martin's work is outstanding, one of the best space themed artists out there.

No, it's a gif. Yeah, I could have used either a png or bmp but I was trying to keep file sizes down. Also it's not as if detail is crucial in a pic of my desktop ;)

Oh okay, sorry, I thought you meant the actual picture on your desktop, not just the picture of your desktop. :p

Still a nice looking one at any rate. :thumb:

    Hi all,

I don't have any special desktop. I used to play with the litestep shell thingy's. But since XP, i haven't used it anymore.

    Now I'm looking for a 'interactive' background/desktop.
But I would prefer to keep the stock xp shell (explorer).

What I want is something among the lines of this:
    - The classic stocks are shown, but they can be hidden aswell too (with a button on the bg). (so: up/down stream, ram/cpu usage, available space, etc.)

    - shortcuts. It should have about 4 (more or less), buttons , that when I click them, it should then show a list of shortcuts (to programs or software). U can hide them by pusshing hte button again.

I hope this makes any sense...

    - an email checker, it should show my new emails in a box with a scrollbar (in case there are more then.. lets say 5-7) it should show data/time, sender address, topic)

So... does anybody know of a desktop enhancer that would take care of these things? (if not completely, then as good as it gets...)
I don't mind a little "programming" (like litestep was).

    Thank you very much

    L

    PS:
for a example, first look at the desktop from 'Ben'. (few posts up), here is the link.

    http://www.a-garden-of-ones-very-own.co.uk/ben/bg.jpg

now, when U click the Analogue-Ghz-Meter, it should open a box on the left of it, showing all the computer stats.

in the big circle, it should have a few buttons, when u click them, there should be a line of clickable shortcuts on the left of the button. when clicked again, they should dissapear again.

next to the button should be the name of the 'group' of shortcuts.

and the emailthingy should be inbedded somehwere, it should check every 10minutes or so.

    Thank you again
    L

I didn't quite install the drivers correctly I guess. that, and I used some beta ones before installing new ones. and I never actually uninstalled the beta ones, just installed over top. now it works fine though :d got the newest ones of nvidias site :D

Lovah, it sounds to me like the best thing (that i know of) for you situation would be some good ole fashion active desktop programming (basically a bunch of html files that are displayed on your desktop in case you don't know). i remember seeing a desktop that could do the same basic things that you wanted (for the most part at least if i remember correctly) and it was done mostly with active desktop...

    HI

    Thanks for your reply.
Yeah I was thinking about that.. but I wanted something more premodded, lol.
So I could use the classic programs for the stats, (and just make them always on bg). and then make a html site (yeah I know what it was, but I was hoping there was an alternative). And then make a site to show the icons.. basically a nice frames page with some buttons. gonna be a b*tch to make that with some nice graphics though.

Are there much limitations on the background? Is it stricktly HTML? Or could I use some flash aswell??..

    Thanks!

    L

as far as i know, if you can make it work on a website, it will work on active desktop as well. and assuming that IS the case, flash might make things somewhat easier for you as far as getting it to look nice as well as functional...
