News Long-awaited Doom 3 leaked online

I'm sure a lot of you know this already, but if you'd just pause blasting imps, zombies & pinky demons you may find this article about DOOM III interesting.

The eagerly awaited blockbuster computer game, Doom 3, has been leaked on the internet.

Copies of the game on file-sharing networks and newsgroups are being downloaded by thousands of people.

The cost to the game's makers, id Software, could run into hundreds of thousands of pounds in lost sales.

The sci-fi horror title has been four years in the making and is due to go on sale in the US on Tuesday and next week in the UK.

For it to have escaped into the wild, someone with a gold master must surely be the leak. I can see some major arse kicking going down once Mr Carmack finds out who they are. But the genie's out of the bottle now.

Eh? I thought this was released early to some places in the US a couple of days ago? Someone had photos of the box and stuff anyway, perhaps they were fake.

 

AFAIK doom 3 has been released in the states, and the download is the final... retail version.

Surprised they haven't incorporated some ober-complex serial code system

 

Apparently some sotres in the states had copies but were not allowed to released them, obviously, untill the release date. Of corse they didnt do this so they released it and some people got copies of it and evidently ripped/cracked it.

Taking a look around some forums there are 29000 people downloading on bi8t torrent alone

Not very good for the industry at all, this really shows it

 

This may have the same situation as UT(Unreal Tournament) was in when it first launched. People had the 'free' and then the cracked versions - these were all well and good in single player mode - but after you had honed your skills in single player mode and wanted to player online with others (and that is the best part) then the 'real' game was required with a valid serial.
Granted, you can pass your serial around, but if more than one serial is on a server you cant get on (and would you give out your serial knowing that lots if not thousands of ppl may use it - preventing you from joining a server?).
A crack may eventually surface - but, depending on how the authentication is made, this could take some time.
I suspect that I will look at screenshots of doom3 to see how good it is, then if its worth playing online I will buy the game.

well to be honest I for one can understand why people are downloading this with all the hype about the extremely good grahpics and how u'll need a new system to run it etc etc. hell... I did and now I know it will run with 1600x1200 with medium detail giving me about 15fps (very playable). so I can rest asure that it will work when i buy it now.

Why am I now going to buy it now you ask....

because a) it's designed to be a multiplatform game (so win/mac/linux users can all be happy) so i'll support the developer for that alone because we need more developers to start moving away from a windows only platform and open gl needs a boost in development.

and b) because as stated above you need a valid cd key to play online which is by far the best part of the game. And if you think you can download it and find a working key theres almost no chance of that as 60000 or so downloads have been done (rough guess) and no keygen will have a spare serial that hasn't been used.

p.s. This game rocks although i've only played 20mins of it to see how it runs...

 

I'll get my mits on a copy of Doom3 within 10days....the wait...

I bet Id are killing themselves for not selling 3 or so copies on e-bay a week back!

 

Yea 3 copys would make up for all lost profits from piracy.

 

Another massive problem theres going to be, is that with x'000 copies downloaded, some with keygens, some with an original key, its gonna wreck online play for those who buy legal copies. They will suffer as the chances of their keys being taken are that much higher.
Mate recently brought CS:CZ, got it home to find the CD had already been registered! It hasnt been out that long either

 

You've got to remember that alot of these people who crack games make keygens etc... work for either retail companies like Game, EB, Dixons etc... language translation companies, magazines for first hand reviews, beta testers and possibly even the game developers themselves, All of these people obviously get the game at different stages and as soon as they get their mits on it its a challenge for them to find out how to crack it or beat the way the serial code is entered so of course its gonna get to the net way before the shops.

That is actuially i really good idea, they should do that cuz i bet a few ppl would pay alot of money for it a few weeks before release, i would if i had the money and was dieing to play it, but im a poor student so i cant
