Anyone know of any software that will do the job of windowsupdate.com ? Something that doesn't need to connect to the internet would be perfect but not a necessity.
such places are called LOCAL AREA NETWORKS, or LANs for short. I for one, would like system which would download all updated for windows and apply such updates to all connected pcs via network -- it would save a lot of trouble/hassle
download patches once copy to multiple machine (or network share) install are they not individual exe's? cant you just have a batch file that'll execute them all? edit: woah, that was freaky
to my knowlege, windows does not download them as would any other program. They are either cached somewhere unknown, encrypted, compressed, or otherwise impossible to aquire. I've tried myself before.
what he is trying to do is download the patches onto ONE machine and then every other maching on the LAN doesnt need to download it of the ms website, but of that local pc...at the moment i think the ms product for it is still a bit ...weak?!?
For larger networks, it is worth investing in SUS (System Update Server), which allows a server to download (and optionally apply) patches for a whole network. No idea how much it costs, but it works well here (well I think so - my colleague does all the hard work!). Yes you can also manually download individual patches. I also have a copy of some Technet Update CDs. My question is: Is there a method of applying groups of these patches together without having to rebout between each one? Chris
I suppose if you set the patch .exes (which incidently you can get from the Windows Update Catelog) in a folder, and then wrote a piece of code telling all the machines on the network to copy the folder over and run the .exes within. The only problem I could see is that human interaction might be needed to tell the computer not to restart after applying a patch.
Um try again. Why is it that everybody who's replied understood what I was asking for except you? If you were able to give me a suggestion you'd have understood what I was asking for, rather than say criticise a question that was worded fine. btw. The same question was posted on another Forum and I got the link I posted above and also a mention of SUS, so the question was perfectly clear.
Seems ok... got a clean xp install in the process at the moment to test it on. I'll get back on how it goes after I've had lunch.
nice one mate...was a bit dubios about it at first looks, but ill let you guinea pig test drive whatever and see what happens
I've been using AutoPatcherXP for a while to update clean XP SP1 boxes, it takes a while to install everything - but so does downloading each and every patch and installing them one by one via WindowsUpdate It's very handy if you're stuck on dial-up or are Internetless... although you've gotta be able to download AutoPatcherXP first of course. I'm looking forward to Windows Update Services, which will replace SUS, it's a shame Microsoft have had to delay it because of XP SP2.
