Athlon 64 2800 or P4 2.8@800

    So which would you choose out of these two processors? They are fairly close in price...with the Athlon being the cheaper. Hmm....which one to buy...

    I believe a P4 2.8 will outperform a 2800... but you must be in the UK since in the US the 3000+ is about the same price as a 2.8

    In games, the A64 2800+ performs on par with a P4 3.2 in most cases.

    It would be nice to have the 64 bit capabilities for future use. I dont have a 64bit OS right now, and have no experiene with Linux, but I will prolly get the 64bit Windows OS.

    The computer will be used primarily for gaming...so then which should I choose? I could even go up to the 3000+, if it would make a noticable difference.

    2.8c + small OC better that a64 2800+ (with + without OC)

    In games AMD better

    the p4 2.8Ghz, for the simple reason:

    Thats what i've got! so its gotta be better! :hehe:

    I wouldn't get either really. both sockets are nearing the ends of their lives. The fastest chip you will get on socket754 is 3700+ and p4's have moved sockets. I'd try and save a bit more and go for a socket939 3500+

    But if its just between those 2, go for the A64
