Early 90s for me..except of course that East-17/Peter Andre/Backstreet boys shoite..Tool, Rammstein, Nirvana and RATM are a few more names to add
So does no one here like classic rock? or are you just talking about recent decades within memory...i seem to be lost because no one's mentioning the old guys like the beatles, stones, zeppelin, hendrix, pink floyd, the who, ect..
Right on SitraAchra with the Classic Rock! Being one of Old Farts here. I would have to say definitely the 70s and yes the Sixty's should have been represented. Boston Kiss Three Dog Night AC/DC Lynyrd Skynyrd Bad Company Kansas Uriah Heap Rush Styx Peter Frampton Led Zeppelin Alice Cooper AeroSmith Jefferson Airplane/Starship Bauchman Turner Overdrive MeatLoaf Great bands Lord_A but I'm a thinkin there heyday was in the 70s Yep I'm sure of it.
I don't like Classic Rock... Smacks of style over substance to me. Which is why I love bands like Iron Monkey, Pitch Shifter and Charger - they had one outlook through their music: "This is who we are, if you don't like it, we're playing it anyway. **** you." *n
Yeah but without that classic rock there would be no Iron Monkey or Charger. They just play/ed 70's stoner rock with bigger amps and tone deaf singers. For me classic rock (what a crap term) was when rock still had soul. Sure it got just stupidly self indulgent towards the end of the 70's, but I'd pick 70's rock over every decade since for sheer quantity and quality of music. [/retracts sharp poking stick from Penski's ribs] Seriously. I am old. 27. I admit it. But 80's metal was so much better. People always just reel off the same old three or four names, but bands like Testament, Anthrax, older Megadeth, Death Angel, NAPALM DEATH, Voivod, Possessed, Exodus, Flotsam and Jetsam, Celtic Frost... man you cannot ignore them or toss them into the same barrel as the more derided artistes.
60's for me. Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, The Beatles. Not most people's favorite, but mine. Espescially Hendrix.
I will not deny that Iron Monkey were Sabbath-esque bluesy metal with more balls, downtuned and with a vocal attack unlike any other. What makes them stand out for me is that they threw more energy and more passion into a single song or live performance than Sabbath could muster up in thirty years. Johnny Morrow good, Ozzy 'paycheck' Osbourne bad. ______ Would you call FNM eighties or nineties? Started in mid-eighties but their best stuff was in the nineties. (same reason I class Napalm Death and Carcass as nineties bands). *n
You know that wooooooooshing sound that you get in cheesy adverts when like someone walks into a wild west saloon and everyone goes quiet? I could have sworn I heard it just now when I read your post about Sabbath Penski... heh heh. Sure Ozzy turned into a bloated idiot winker when he left Sabbath, and Sabbath since has been little more than a private **** fantasy for Mr. Iommi; but prime Sabbath is untouchable in my books. When they were young and naive and the money hadn't started to really roll in, the music was superb. I don't think you can really compare the 'Monkey and Sabbath. There's a connection there musically, but its really more via bands like Saint Vitus, the Melvins, Sleep, and Eyehategod inbetween imho. Still one of my all time most listened too metal records is 'Our Problem', with [still] in my book one of the most offensive sleeves too FNM... toughie. I'd say 90's cos they were a much bigger influence based on their 90's output than their 80's which was a little more derivative. So therefore I'd go for Angel Dust onwards.
Then again, I think Sabbath are the most overrated band in history and even in their 'prime' were nothing more than a group of high brummies with a bad singer and recycled blues riffs. *n
OH PLEASE GOD NO!!! ANYONE but Manowar... However, I do have to agree that 80's metal is where it's at! Who came out of the 80's? Well, let us not forget: Ozzy Panetra Slayer Anthrax Judas Priest and on and on and on However, as far as regular, straight-forward rock, I'd definetely say the 70's. Overall though, I prefer the 80's.. EDIT:: Why do I have this feeling that this thread will just pretty much be a gauge on the ages of people who reply?
Like spike said, the 80's: A-Ha, Duran Duran, (the end of) Abba, Visage, Ultravox, Kim Wilde, Mike Oldfield, Eurythmics, Falco, Enya (!), Beach Boys, ...
Progression all the way through the decades really, but my personal favourites were 'born' of the mid-late 90's. Kweli, Mos Def, J5, Blackalicious, etc.
