I already have a Hard drive, psu and case and dvd drives, but am totally out of it as to what hardwear (mobo, cpu, ram GFX card) I would need to run it. I'm talking real bang for buck performance here.

    ANyone got any suggestions?

    Cheers :thumb:

It's possible to squeeze a s754 into that price easily, if that's good enough for you. Probably with a decent Sempron, 6600GT and 512mb of ram, pushing for 1gb

The x700 would be the competing ATi card.

the X700 should be able to play it nearly at top everything, the X700 is better than my 9800Pro and mine runs fine on everything full at 4 x AA and 2 x AF or something. I was just saying don't buy the FX5200, not being rude but it is a really bad idea. Buy a 9800 Pro second hand or a new 6600GT.

my 9600 pro runs HL2 fine on all high settings at 1024x768, with 2x AA.

I saw a benchmark that showed the 9800Pro/XT versus the 6600GT in HL2. IIRC the 9800Pro came out on top, so if the system's purely being built for HL2, then the 9800 would be a better bet, and it's cheaper :)

Id definitely reccomend a 9800 pro over a 6600 if your primary objective is Half Life 2.

My reccomendation on hardware is an Athlon 64 2800+ or 3000+ (socket 754), Nforce 3 motherboard, 9800 pro, and 512 MB to 1 Gigabyte of RAM.
