this shouldnt need asking but i have a p3 800 mhz and i would like to know if/how i can seperate it from my mobo for a possable upgrade to maybe a p3 1.8?
wouldnt you be better off getting a new mobo/p4..? otherwise, remove heatsink, lift up socket arm, and remove cpu.
oooh the monkey looks into his crystal LAG ball and sees explosions happening and a dead mobo remember to anti-static b4 you touch it
iirc the p3 didnt go to a 1.8, there are no viable uprage paths from an 800, there are the 1.0ghz, and possibly 1.2ghz versions if you are really lucky, but not worth the change.
well i saw one on e-bay, unless he's being even more of a moron than i am.....i dont like to be near the edge of technology, but i suppose an oldish p4/mobo combo wouldnt do any harm, i dont realy need the speed though, ill look into it, dont have too much ££ though, going to col in a few weeks , i have about £200 - £250 at the mo, any suggestions but i dont realy want to spend all of it, if atall possable
Ask yourself: do you really need to upgrade? You could put together a nice little AMD system for about £160 from ebuyer. 63166 - Abit NF7 v2 - £45 2 x 49446 - 256MB DDR400 - £24 each. 46513 - athlon xp2500 barton retail - £57 this would outperform a 1.2Ghz P3 in most things. or a 1.8 P3
your right, i dont NEED to upgrade, sitting next to it is a p3 450 Mhz using a SLOT processor, they are both in ATX modded cases, i do intend to put summit sweet in them one day, but right now the only thing i can think of that could be faster is my S@h boinc Wu time, and im not the sort of obsessive to buy a new pc JUST for that..... .....am i?
monkeyspank......that system looks good ill reshearch that further.... and as for that idiot selling the cpu, ill find him and tell him his prices are too high for a P3, ask him to lower them and buy a P4 for a steal!
...the pentium 3 went up to 1ghz, but the pentium 3 tualatin went up to 1.4 (p3-s type)... the 1.4-s would outperform a p4 1.8 easily at clock speeds...and that at 1.45vcore with a thermal output of 27.3w (iirc)....they are nice cpus! if you can pick up one of those on ebay for cheap, trust me their worth it...i paid 160 for mine when they were new, and i still prefer using my p3 rig to any other amd concuction that i have tried in the last few years, just due to the sheir smoothness that the os runs at...
I find the opposite. Having said that, my P3 550 is stuck with 100 FSB and SDram, whereas my athlons are at 210 minimum with pairs of DDR in dual channel..
hey felix, that idea sounds great, aslong as its just a case of taking the heatsink off taking the old chip out putting thermal paste on the new chip putting the new chip in putting a heatsink back on FINNITO! am i correct?
Except that they don't multitask well. But, with a good speed HDD and decent RAM, you can make up for this. Helped someone with a Celery a little bit ago, he got it cheap off a friend and we basically built a system around it. It actually didn't turn out too bad. Specs: 2.8 Ghz Celeron ASUS P4P800-E Deluxy mobo 1GB Kingston ValueRAM ATi 9800Pro 120GB WD SATA hdd 3dmark03 scores: ~5380 (can't remember exactly, it was somewhere in the high 5300's) So, if you build a good system around a Celly, you can come out decently.
