By hacking the T-Mobile Network, according to elReg:

A sophisticated computer hacker had access to servers at wireless giant T-Mobile for at least a year, which he used to monitor US Secret Service email, obtain customers' passwords and Social Security numbers, and download candid photos taken by Sidekick users, including Hollywood celebrities, SecurityFocus has learned.

Twenty-one year-old Nicolas Jacobsen was quietly charged with the intrusions last October, after a Secret Service informant helped investigators link him to sensitive agency documents that were circulating in underground IRC chat rooms. The informant also produced evidence that Jacobsen was behind an offer to provide T-Mobile customers' personal information to identity thieves through an Internet bulletin board, according to court records.

Keeping it away from the spotlight, eh? I wonder why? ;)

it's funny though....if he had just kept it all to himself and not bragged about it, it is likely nobody would've ever caught him

I wish someone would hack my email account, they might be able to delete the 1000+ daily Viagra and Cialis offers.

You guys have given me an idea!

For $50 a year (or $5 a months), give me your email info and password, I'll go in and delete all the spam.

    A truly personalized spam filter.

    :D

And back on topic... I bet some hackers that don't brag still get caught, you just don't hear about it... I think that's scarier...

I'm sure the Secret Service have more sense than to pass sensitive information around through email. Everyone knows that it's not secure as every computer that it's routed through has the chance to read it.

What, so your condoning him trying to sell personal info?! That's bs, and don't turn around and say, 'Well they should've been more secure', because, as we all know, hackers always find a way if they're determined. It's just not cricket! Why can't people just be civil... :waah:

He's not condoning it, he's saying it doesn't warrant the death penalty, and it needs due process...

I think it would be best if liquid would ellaborate, because what I saw was this:
He thought you were just as... psychotic? ... because you have labelled him worse than any other thief and deserving death. When in reality you have no idea what the situation was. You don't know what information he stole. You don't know what he sold and what he didn't. You don't know how he got into the server to begin with.
You've never sat down and had tea with him. You've never met him walking down the street.
You have absolutely no idea who he is. All you know is the two sentences worth of information in that article...

Yet you think he deserves to die.

I could be way off, like I said I'd prefer liquid to come clarify, but that's what I got from it...

Ok, misunderstanding there. Of course I don't actually want him to end up dead, based on those facts alone, I was just exajurating. However, the point still stands that if he is found to be guilty he deserves a reasonable punishment for trying to sell personal info. Although, it depends what information it was I suppose, if it was the same sort of thing that Safeway and Sainsburys collect when you use your club card then that's a bit different, however if it was credit card info then that's real bad and he deserves a slap!

Selling secrets, well that's something altogether different... :naughty:
