And there was rejoicing throught the land... The Inq gives us the details:

SOURCES CLAIMED Microsoft is planning to introduce its 64 bit operating system for Intel and AMD processors (iAMD64) on the 29th of April. The sources are close to Microsoft.

It appears there will be a release to manufacturing version of WinXP 64 in March. That's the stage before the CDs get stamped out and the boxes get printed.

Quite coincidentally, Intel will finally be ready with its full line of 64 bit capable CPUs, including Celeron 64s, close to that date. This, of course, is entirely coincidental and is just the way things can spookily happen at the same time in our industry.

Little AMD has talked and talked about 64 bit processing for ages now and soon we will see Windows tackling its version of iAMD64, just like the Linux OSes have before it.

March, April, what's the difference? In terms of aeonic transformations like Microsoft Longhorn, a month here and there is but the blinking of an eye.

    Blink.

Windows 64-bit used up waaaay to much more memory too be use too its potentual. i have 1gb of generic ram, i would at least need 512mb more too keep the preformence i have now with the additional benefits from the 64-bit OS.

At least i think...if anyone wants too clarify, then please do so :D

in terms of games performance, will (for example) hl2 run better ona 64bit os + 64bit cpu than a 32bit platform ?

I think the whole Intel/Microsoft thing is taken pretty much for granted. Since hearing a warm and fuzzy speech from Steve "I'm Crayzeee" Balmer at IDF last spring the press pretty much assumed they were in bed together...

IIRC there is already a non public version of Quake that runs at 64Bit.

Can i assume old 32bit apps will run normally without having to run them within an emulator or something?

For one i never even knew\heard any speach by Steve "I'm Crayzeee" Balmer and two, i just thought it was strange how we get the tech first but the software isn't released until it has a full blown competitor :thumb: .

    That's a no-brainer! :hehe: They're like Tweedle-dumb and Tweedle-dee....

What worries me, even though M$ have taken they're sweet time, is that the Intel/M$ unison may push a viable 64bit OS out too soon. In other words, for the sake of selling more new M$ products and Intel hardware onto us poor punters. I mean look at PCI-X, did we really need it now? No.

    ....read my sig.....
However PCI-E is taking over quite rapidly and will be the standard within the next year if not six months. For servers and whatnot they really do need it now since the expansion interfaces were the biggest bottlenecks. And PCI-X has been out for a couple of years, and was desperately needed where it is located.

That is correct. 32bit apps will run fine, they just won't take advantage of the full 64bit capability.

Wish they would spend the time and bloody well devlope longhorn, and longhorn 64bit, and longhorn server. Oh well, just have to wait till summer 2006 for it. Even know windows said longhorn will be done 2005 this year, infact in a few months, but they moved the date back more than a year due to the new filesystem WINFS.

/me goes and makes a coffee and waits.
