Hi.. Any Electricians in the house.. I have this unwanted cable and I want to remove it, I think the correct thing to do would be to cut the cable as close to the PCB as possible or am I wrong... The Cable >> Ive marked some of the wires, the rest are hidden but same principle..Is this is ok to snip them off.... Thx for any help...
Some wires from the plug route them selfs to a single spot on the PCB , like you see the orange one ive marked up on the bottom right... This one ok too.. Thx for reply.... Im minutes away from Sleeving
The "correct" way to remove cables from a PSU is to "desolder" (is that really a word or did i make it up?) them! However - if you are unable to solder for one or another reason the best way is to cut them off as close to the soldering as possible! It might be a good idea to wrap some electrical tape around the loose ends but if you cut them right at the base it's kinda overkill! Good luck!
Ye Im going to cut them at the base..... Thx for info... Rhyan's off to cut... ****Edit ......Found my Soldering Iron...
why do they still put those cables on psus? what were they originally for and why are they still there? also, (correct me if im wrong) you couldnt convert it to molex because of the different voltage.
if i am correct those cables where put there to create a universal power supply that works now on both ATX MOBO's and AT MOBO's that way they didnt have to sell seperate PSU's after the MOBO's size change hope this helps Duggy
If you cut them make sure you heatshrink the wire ends seperatley, don't want anything shorting do we
If you have a hot glue gun. Put a bit of glue over the exposed ends after cutting off the wires if you can.
They vere originally for the first generation P4 boards (some of them anyway). I think they still put them on so that the PSU's are backward compatible. Most users never complain about getting to much when they buy something. And most of them doesn't mind having LOTS of loose wires eiter.. I guess we modders are a bit...special.. Nope. AT had two of those plugs, however they had different voltages. The only thing that is common is the connector itself. An ATX psu won't work on an AT pc anyway, as an AT pc don't have the PWRON signal from the mobo. AT PSU's are switched on the HV side of the PSU.
Desoldering that part of a PSU is very tough. If you look on the underside, you'll see a huge glob of solder covering the entire area for that rail. All that metal, combined with the wires themselves, absorb a lot of heat. Even with my 210 watt soldering gun I was never able to turn it into a pool of hot metal. Cutting them is safer - trying to desolder only risks turning the whole thing into a cold solder joint.
snip them at the base with some good pliers/wire cutters that way you can almost get them flush.i did this and also removed a few molex connectors as this 550W enermax has far too many.
All done , I De-Soldered some and the ones that where more difficult to reach I snipped off leaving 2 cm or so of wire, then I placed some Heat Shrink on the ends (1 cm Down) and melted it.. Runs fine..
Cutting it will be fine. If you can't get right into the PCB just insulate any excess cabling and tuck it out of the way before putting the cover back on. [edit] Should read the thread before I post, huh?
