    Couple of questions...

    1. What OS are you running.
    2. Do wish your friends to be able to connect to your machine over the internet 24/7?

I use a Pentium II 400Mhz pc with 256Mb ram 80Gb HDD, No floppy, no CD, Fedora Linux (I have Fedora experts to help) you could use any decent Linux distribution, Apache and the built in FTP server. I use WinSCP and PuTTY to do any work on the box.

Oh and a damn decent firewall, Smoothwall in my case, which allows access to the server from the Internet but still protects my network.

You could register your site with No-ip, or just teach your friends to use your ip address

i use a K62-400 running Debian Linux/PHP/Apache/MySQL and it works great. i haven't installed an ftp server on it, as i have no need for one. but shouldn't be that hard. i use it as a testing server, and my site is hosted on it.

i also use smoothwall as my firewall/router, its on a P166.

if your looking for something really simple i use Abyss Web Server http://www.aprelium.com/ one of the esiest http servers ive ever seen. just dont make the mistake 80,000 other people make and ask whats wrong when they dont forward the ports. also   a little peice of important information. if you are using optonline it i against the service agreement to run a web server of ftp, or anything of that sort. if you want to take a risk and go against the agreement just change the port number, make sure it is not 80.(personally i use 9999)

thata the port forwarding, i am assuming you have a router, if so log into it, find a button that says about port forwarding and forward port 80to your machine, then all the eternal people need to know is your ip, oer usecsomthing like dnydns to get a dynamic domain name to point to it. ps wrotethis on a tablet :wallbash: .

Erm...most routers should do that...even the cheap ones. Look harder!

Switches will be even worse equipped to set up port forwarding...

also, you will generally want to forward port 21 to your server for ftp.
