you probably need to up your FSB in your BIOS to get your processor running at full speed.

You should post in the hardware section mate, the people there will help you get your PC sorted in no time ;)

Your PC will slow down when it runs out of RAM (quite likely with 256MB) as it has to start using the HDD instead. If the CPU gets too hot, it will lock up or crash, not slow down. 50 degrees is OK, but not for a seriously underclocked cpu at stock voltage.

You could play Call of Duty online.
    Great online game.
You should get that processor checked out though.

    counterstrike is good.

It will play on all computers, is easily available (only needs halflife) and has specific servers for new players.

Counterstrike is pretty hardcore. You can have a lot of fun on Call of Duty multiplayer especially if you're good at fps's.

Counter-Strike and Pandora Tomorrow are fun online games. But lately (becuase Paint-ball season is closely approaching...) I have been hardcore into Digital paintball mod for Half-Life 1. If you like paintball I suggest that game, but any of the games mentioned above are terrific choices as well.

I'd have to say take the jump and buy half life 2. Mainly because it comes with counterstrike, counterstrike source, half life, half life source, and like 5 more I think. (when purchasing a silver account from steam)

I'm fairly new to FPS and I've really enjoyed it. I played with a GeForce 2 and an AMD Athlon XP 2500+/512Mb RAM no problem.
I just upgraded to a 9800 Pro, and it is definitely nicer to have 1280x1024 with full anti-aliasing, but the old GeForce 2 ran counterstrike source at 800x600 just fine.

For n00bs Diablo 2 isn't that bad. the online community is friendly enough and they like to help out newbies. Should run very easily on your comp.
