OSX wont run on a Pentium 4 you need a mac and Solaris will cost a fortune. Linux is probably the best option to go. I hear Ubuntu is doing quite well. I use Gentoo but I wouldnt recomend it for learning how to use linux

    Solaris is free.
You just have to pay for any support.

Or you could use PearPC which is free and is not breaching multiple copyright laws. CherryOS is a direct copy of PearPC with multiple breaches of the GPL and they probably are about to get sued horribly

CherryOS is an evil rip off of PearPC which allows you to run OSX on a PC.

Solaris is free, but support costs $$$

    Linux is teh 1337

    Windows is easy

*BSD is secure (although security of course depends on an admin with a clue) and fun.

OS/2 is ... well you get the idea.

... at the end of the day an OS is just a tool, so you should choose an OS that does what you need well. If the PC is going to be just folding and maybe serving up some files, then Linux would probably be best. For a router I'd go with OpenBSD.

cherryOS was a complete ripoff of pearpc but its supposed to run quite a bit better
i know a woman that still uses OS/2 as her main operating system :wallbash:
(she looks like bob from fight club too :worried: )
