I want to try and bit of dj mixing, but don't really know where to start. I don't have the room for decks, which doesn't help. Is there any other ways i can mix with out decks? i know there are some programs out there, but i don't know were to start on most of them. Also is there a program that you can use to get get the voice from a song and change it, so it's like high pitched?

    Thanks :)

theres a program i used to mess around with called ejay:mix station.
pretty simple to use although i didnt give it much time.
as for changing tunes etc, ive used soundforge to do it for mp3's and stuff.

try sonic foundry's Acid Pro if you want to sequence sound bytes and audio clips. MTV made some silly program back around 2000 that allowed you to create music in the same way with a pre-recorded library of beats/sounds. i seem to remember someone making a keyboard or effects board that had a "scratch" wheel on it...

yeah, the "mixman" controler: Dee Jay!

The only thing with using dj sotware on your laptop or pc is that while they will play 2 tracks simultaneously on a left and right channel, its pretty pointless unless you have 2 soundcards(one for the speakers, and one for your headphones). It can be abit of a problem when you're looking for that cue point etc.

Never the less, there is one piece of software, called BPM Studio, which is by far the best program for beginners. It is straightforward to use and user friendly.

After you become a bit of pro on that, you could try out PC DJ, which has a lot of advanced features.

Lastly if you want a real dj experience, that wont cost an arm and a leg, that you can use with your pc, check out this I just bought this, and its great. Lots of fun, has 2 channels so you can use your heaphones and your speakers.

    Hope this helps.

well i've downloaded BPM Studio and found a song i want to use, but i have one or two questions. I can change the tempo of the song to get the pitch i want, but i have to stay clicked on it and i can't do anything else. Is there any other way i can do it with out leaving my mouse on it? also is there a guide or something that could get me started on what i'm doing? i know it's a daft questions as most dj's train them selfs, but i'm just lost lol

theres about a million programs out there which you could use. But it all depends on what you what as a final product.
    If your just going to be mixing songs with another song and what to with ease then the following would be of use;

Ots Dj - This is a quite simple program which allows you to enter all of your tracks (in the form of mp3s, wma, or ots format) into the program and run an automated dj set, it automatically shuffles the tracks and works through them one by one, mixing one track with another once it ends.
    it allows winamp plugins too
Its a brilliant program, the only draw back is that it doesnt beatmatch and mix those effectively

PCDJ - This is a program which i have been testing for a couple of weeks now, and so far i have found it to be brilliant. It will do much like Ots DJ however it allows for more tweaking and advanced settings, examples of this are specialist effects examples are flanger, echo etc.
It specifies that it allows for beat matching but im yet to find this function in pcdj red. Could anyone shed some light on this!?!?

and then you can go into advanced programs like adobe audition, acid pro, and cubasis which are all midi based programs.

What are you ideally going to be trying to achieve??

If you're ever interested in buying some turntables, I have a pair for sale with some cartridges. The best software [so I hear] is Traktor, but Sound Forge is good for editing files.

There's a million programs you can use and a million ways to control them, but at the end of the day the only way to mix is with proper decks. Plus you look a bit sad if you're doing a sound system at a party and you're sat there with a laptop.
