Luminglas

Have you completely given up of the Luminglas??
I thing the unit would look sweet installed!!!!

What if you pull the PSU apart and mount the power unit directly into the PSU, they always have plenty of room in the top section, this would fix many issues you are having with it....

The fans in your PSU would cool it.....
The casing for the PSU would shield it.....
You could solder it into the 120V coming into the PSU so you wouldn't need an additional plug (just make sure you never plug it into 230V.....
You would just have to run the wire out of the PSU and down to the unit (adding a plug some where along the way so you can remove the panel...

Just some thoughts....

Nonononono! I haven't given up on Mr. Luminglas. I'm just waiting until the BLUE Neon rings get here so I can kill 2 birds with one stone. It's a real pain disassembling and reassembling that ring.

I'll look into the PSU idea. It's one of the last components I plan on modding.

Just a little tip - let it run for a few days first, and see how hot the transformer gets. If it gets hot at all, you might want to reconsider putting it inside the psu, epecially if it obstructs PSU airflow. There's a reason why there's space inside a PSU. Heat dispatching. Airflow needs a little room to go on

Could work, just make sure it doesn't run too hot, and isn't too big - it shouldn't be a problem though.

 

Plexi-cladding

I have a plan to use the black mirrored plexi
(or maybe just plain black plexi) to "clad" the side
panels with. Still waiting for the blue neon rings
to get here to finish off the Lumin-mod.

Here's a design I Photoshopped that both I and
the spouse agree upon.



I plan on possibly even getting this laser cut (if
anyone knows a good place here in the states)
and backlit to illuminate the logo.

Lemme know what you think before I go ahead
and carve the plexi up this weekend. This will
probably be the final design but it always helps
to have more input.

I agree here , but if you gut the transformer (which you already did), then you will only have the thin board:

to mount and there is plenty of airspace in the PSU (for cooling the PSU and this transformer, maybe you could look up the fan in the PSU and check the CFM, might think about putting an aftermarket in there with a tad bit more blow power

That is scary... that is a very similar idea I have for my case. I want to have a laser-cut polished stainless steel panel backlit by an EL sheet on the mobo side.

On the window side I was thinking a dual layer of laser-etched perspex (the internal layer being a sort of frame in a different colour), also with some EL sheet to highlight some detail. I better get on with it before my ideas cease to be original!

 

LCD or VFD??

I'm a little disappointed that you didn't show the install of the screen... maybe you are going to go back to that when you mod the front panel....
I am looking into an LCD/VFD right now for my Black Glow Mod , what model are you using here and where did you aquire it??

 

The LCD was in his case before he started the mod. It's a Crystalfontz, though he didn't mention the model. It was a gift from his wife.

I was thinking the same thing about the transformer after reading bootupbuddah's Perforated thread. Just solder it to the inside of the main plug.

 

Yeah. It's been in the case cince I got it. I've had it for
2 years and will probably have it until it burns out. It a Crystalfontz 4x20 USB LCD. I got it because I didn't know how
to wire a serial connection. The drawback is that I have
to run a usb card wit and internal connector as the model
I have doesn't have mobo connectors. I am an idiot when it
comes to stuff like that. Gonna hafta learn if I wanna get
serious with modding stuff.

 

Cool. I didn't want to use an EL sheet although I thought
about it. I have one of those reverse EL glo gauges for my car that
I could peel the sticker off for the speedo and such and it would
already be wired up. It's for a 92 Honda Prelude so it's just one big
rectangular sheet. I'm waffling back and forth with the materials to
use for it (brushed black aluminum sounds real good. but
want it so that ONLY the logo is illuminated and nothing else.

I can't quite picture what you have in mind for the window side
so you're safe in the originality department.

The PSU thing is primary on my mind because of the mods I'll
have to make to it. I've modded a PSU before but it was strictly
cosmetic. Do you believe I don't yet own a soldering iron?

 

I thought that was standard issue to go along with the dremel.....
The PSU shouldn't be a problem, just make sure you drain the capacitors of their juice before you work on anything.....

 

To do that you just grab the big one... right? ? ?

About the power for that sparkly light thingy

You could just connect the transformer directly to the pu and then disguise it or place in a box / container. edit: what I mean is, connect it to the main power jack not to the pu, just inside of the pu box.



Then you could cover the wire like this.



Now if you picture that bare space next to it you could put the box there. It may cover up a slot or two but should be okay. These are from my mod, but there isn't patent on the idea.

By the way, great mod: you can always tell how good a mod is by the guys that post in it.... like me!

 

Small update part II

Well. Still waiting for the parts to get here to complete the Luminglas and neon ring mods. So while I was waiting I thought I'd do a little housekeeping and rearranging of stuffs. Pardon for the lack of in-progress pictures but this was a pain in the neck and highly chaotic ordeal.

First and easiest was...



...the installation of the vandal switch and the new HDD LED.^^^
Pretty straight forward. Nothing you haven't seen a million times.

The next thing was to install the top mounted 3.5" Noise Isolator
fan controller.

You can see where I tried to tidy up the wiring mess I had
going on.



If you look closely you can see I removed one of the HDD cages.^^^
Why I didn't remove both of them I'm still trying to figure out.
Especially since I relocated the 3 HDD's to...



...this location.^^^

I took a drive cage out of an old Antec/Cheiftec/Chenming Dragon
case and shoved the drives in it. It's a real cramped fit where
they live now. I have to find a way to keep them cool in this
location. No airflow there.



And here she is back on her desk.^^^

That's it for now. Still waiting on the other parts to finish this
stage out.

 

Something to add to the fan controller. I forgot to
mention this but originally in that location I planned
on installing a laptop DVD burner there but decided
against it as it seemed too complicated and I hadn't
planned on past how it would look.
