Would a set of 3 way 6x9's work when intigrated in to a Trust 5.1 system?
i was planing on making a complete set of speakers including sub.

i know i would have to figure out all the maths and box sizes but is there anything that will cause this not to work?

excuse my ignorance i'm new to all this

As in 6x9's im guessing you mean car speakers. I am not sure about what the ohms in the "trust 5.1 system" you have but car speakers run at 6 ohms. A home stero runs at 8 ohms. If you try to run car speakers on a home sterio it will destroy it eventually. All i can say is make sure the amp on ur 5.1 system is sending out 6 ohms.

Why would you want to use 6x9s? Wouldn't component speakers be better?

To be honest, car audio would not sound very good when used in home theatre. There are MANY other better alternatives. What is your budget, and what types of tools do you have access to. With that I can tell you what a good choice is.

Most car audio I know of runs at 4 ohms, you could link two together in series and use them as a single 8 ohm speaker.

amps should be able to handle a range of ohms...
eg: 8ohm would be into 100watt
    4ohm 50watt ish
    etc
most speakers drop far lower than the stated ohm. as its not static, it changes with music.

    !

    kinda backwards there..

    goes like this:

let say 8 ohms is 200w
then 4 ohms would be 400w
and 2 ohms would be 800w
finally 1 ohm would be 1600w

just out of instrest, since some dude gave me a pair of 6x9's last nite.

    Impendance 4 ohms
    peak power 170W

Would I just be able to swop the speaker at the end of the cable, and it would work?

it would work, but might be harming your amp, and was also sound pretty bad in a home environment. how will you be mounting them? as just resting them ontop of something will do no favours to the sound.

Ok i wouldnt say car audio wouldnt sound the best alot of ppl i know use the adire temptest in home audio as well as the brahmas comp speakers for high powered subs

alot of ppl some time use car audio speakers in custom home setups because they draw less power

and if set up correctly they will sound just as good if not better in some cases

it all comes down to A do u wanna do it your self and B how much do u wanna spend in money and time and effort

anyway they will work its all in how u set them up, good luck

also that link you linked too... i wouldnt put too much faith into it. doesnt really seem to know what he is talking about. he just assumes that because it is loud and it rumbles because it has so much bass is good. which couldnt be further from the truth.
no mention on what they actually sounded like. other than "good" which is so un-descriptive.

First off the Adire tempest is a household driver, which happens to also work really well in car audio. I have one in a 14'x20'x8' room and it slays. Second the Adire Brahmas, designed for car audio, have excellent excursion and the T/S values make the 15" and 12" versions good for home audio. Adire does not recommend the 10" for home audio though.

A car sub in a houshold is one thing, but no one who wants quality sound in their house will use 6x9s or 2-ways other car componentry. They are simply not suited for that type of use

PS click here if you want to check out the sub I made for my theatre.
