The music equivilant of Interpol are stepping up their efforts to stop online music piracy. This from the Beeb:

More than 900 internet file-sharers were threatened with legal action on Tuesday as the global music industry stepped up its anti-piracy war.
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) announced it was launching 963 new actions in 11 countries in Europe and Asia.

It brings the number of cases against internet users accused of illegally uploading music to 11,552 worldwide.

Currently 90 internet users have faced or are facing legal action in the UK.

i dunno why record companys complain about artist's getting no money, since they are also ripping the artist out of money they should have earned. record company get's about 8x more than the artist, now hows that fair? of corse it shouldnt be even as adertising and promoting cost money...

as for downloading pornography whos realy going to want a bill at the end of the month with some 'xxx' mumbo jumbo printed on it?

Quite right, there is the cost of studio time, mixing, editing, pressing, printing, promoting, shipping, and retail shelf space. And don't forget that it's not just the costs of the materials (plastic, foil, paper, ink, petrol), but also the people who actually do that stuff. Plus the final retail markup is often 50%-60% of the total retail price.

Sure, a lot of artists are probably bound by somewhat unfair contracts. But let's face it, if artists (especially the popular ones, who have some leverage when renegotiating their contracts) released their music themselves, would they really be getting that much more? There's an argument that it's OK not to pay for music because the artists hardly get any of your money, but 1% of nothing is still nothing. And I haven't heard any stories of artists receiving fan-mail with cheques inside.

Anyway, back to the actual news story, I'm glad that this is happening. I'm glad because it means that the record companies are going after the lawbreakers themselves, rather than the (in my view) perfectly blameless file-sharing software makers.

Ok, I can not say that I agree with music piracy, but the last 5 CD's I have purchased have been total CRAP! Maybe one good song on each, but that's it. I wish I could return a CD after a week if it's total crap.

I am all about supporting the artist if I like their music, but I don't want to pay for something I won't listen to (but have to buy to hear first).

Well put. Even most of the CDs I've pirated, there are only a couple tracks worth paying for.

I mean... umm.. no I didn't pirate them... a solar flare caused a wave of magnetism to conveniently rearrange part of my hard drive. :thumb:

Plus they only tend to play a few of the tracks on the album, and you can wind up with a CD with only a couple good songs on.

thats happens with all music CD's

heres an idea, all of those places that sell the CD's, sanity and ppl like that, have a setup like this

you walk into a store and purchase a song, say $3 a song or get 15 songs for $30, make them a username and password and let them download there limited number of songs of the sanity site.

like a paid subscription without the credit card :thumb:

That's a good idea, I'm all for it. I don't know about other countries, but I know that there's been at least one website in Australia offering a service like this where they sent you CDs, and it collapsed years ago. I think that the problem is the licencing arrangement.

Not to mention all of those online music retailers :D

yes, but this way we can pay for it without the need for a credit card and DL the songs we want when we want, like a pre-paid mobile phone :)

I believe it's even illegal to rip your own cd's onto PC in the UK.

Anyway, if the music industry wanted to combat piracy they'd lower the cost of a CD to £5 or under, never ever raise it above that price, and actually let people do with their cd as they choose to(within reason). That means being allowed to rip my cd to mp3's for my Ipod as often as I choose to, that means being able to play my cds on any regular cd playing hardware without copy protection crap, and that means being allowed to loan or sell my cds to other people.

its not illegal to do that, but i think it is illegal to lend cds (or dvds and games for that matter)... i think u can sell them though

i think the protection they put on legaly downloaded music can be ridiculous, they stop you putting it on cd, onto mp3 player etc

I belive it is (not 100% sure, just about 80% :p)
Its just got stupid this piracy thing
It will never be stopped people always come up with a way round it one way ot another

I belive people download before a album is released, then most people will buy it as they prefer to have it on cd, as imo i like to have the legit casing etc :) just makes it loads better :D esp with dvds and quailty is better
