Hi a couple of days ago my computer started messing up real bad. I couldn't boot it up, it would just say Checking NV RAM.. so I tried to take off a few things like my second hard drive and my DVD-RW and my CD-RW. then it worked fine. So i tried to connect my DVD and CD drives but my computer only detected my DVD Rom which was the Secondary Master. THEN i tried putting the CD Rom on the Secondary Master and the DVD Rom on the Secondary Slave so then only my CD Rom was detected. I tried it with my second hard drive on the Primary Slave and it didnt work but it was fine on the Primary Master!! Whats up that!! My specs Windows XP Professional SP2 AMD Athlon XP 1.04GHz 368MB RAM 80GB Hard Drive 40GB Hard Drive DVD-RW CD-RW Pretty crap eh?
Hi I had a similar problem, slaving DVD drives, switching master etc. I took the Cmos batery out, then put it back in, rebooted and I had a Checksum error message displayed. Rebooted again and all was fine. All masters and slaves recognised and in the right places!!! Hope this helps Cheers
Chairboy - Thanks, but I dont have any spare IDE cables so i cant change them Seagull - hmm i might try that thanks
Change the cables - get some more: just ask someone nicely and they might even send you one/two for postage on the FS forums, that's if you can't get one from another comp or something.
Are you changing the jumpers on the drives themselves or just moving the drives around on the cables? Some cables are labeled master/slave etc - so from your description, I am not sure if you are moving them from cable to cable only or setting the jumpers as well.
Yes i also set the jumpers on the drive when i changed the drives to master/slave on the IDE cables. I just don't understand why it isnt working. The master connnection works OK but i cant connect a slave to either IDE.
OK ive decided to buy a new motherboard this weekend and maybe a new CPU. Any ideas for a decent cheap motherboard?
with your specs i wouldnt bother going for a new mobo, try cables first and if that dont work, go for a full system upgrade
I've been meaning to get a new motherboard for ages but i cant afford a top-notch one. My computer crashes alot(nearly everytime i use it!) so a new motherboard would definetely be a good thing and this IDE problem just adds to that! lol Also gives me a chance to get a couple of extra stuff too (LEDs, PCBs etc)
