Not going to matrix out all the possible combinations of actual drives out there, these are the technical maximums for HDD transfers ..

    ATA/33 - 33Mbs
    ATA/66 - 66Mbs
    ATA/100 - 100Mbs (I think theres a pattern here)
    UDMA/5 - 100Mbs
    SATA - 150Mbs
    IEEE 1394 - 400Mbs

Of course actual implementation speeds are normally much less.

    That's not quite right. ATA speeds are MBytes/sec, USB and Firewire are in Megabits per second (ie, USB2 = 60MB/s, FW = 50MB/s). And UDMA/5 IS ATA/100 (and 4 is 66, 3 is 33, 6 is 133, and 7 is 150=SATA1 I believe)

60GB, 7200RPM HDD (Laptop size) on ebuyer is £100.

Would fitting a 7200RPM Laptop drive boost the speed of the mini by any real percentage?

whats real and whats fake? Depends alot on what you do with your system. The system will be faster, will it be noticable is pretty much down to your view, but it will be faster....

I reckon putting a 7200rpm drive in the mini would melt it.

I cant see the problem with putting one of those thinner drives in them.. apart from the meltage..

:eyebrow: Thats the third time you've resurrected and old post this evening sam0r. I'm sure this problem would have been sorted!

But I do agree with you that a slimline drive would be good, as out of laptops. A bit of modding wouldn't go amiss!
