Well BF3 will run on ultra even with 1gb gddr so long as you're running x16 PCIe. 580 will be better even with 1.5gb vram. The most BF3 has used at 1080 for me is 1.6gb but it's not a problem on an x16 slot. At dual x8 I was using in SLI it crippled performance and then the 1gb vram on my old 560ti's became an issue. I would go 580. Those 512 cores will do a lot for your games.
Thanks for the tip. This is the card that I currently have as a backup option. I am really tempted by the triple overvoltage and am waiting to see what the word is on the MSi overclocking ability. If not, the Sapphire will soon grace my rig.
I ended up getting the GTX 580. Very happy with the purchase but just a quick question about the temps. I'm idling at 40C on 45% fan speed and load 75-80% at 68% fan speed. Are these normal and what's the max temp these cards can handle? Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
You mean 80c of course don't you which sounds very good for 68% fan speed. Why would you think those temps were high? Are u used to watercooling?
My 6870 didn't go above 70c on around 50% fan speed. I'm very interested in watercooling but I can't afford it yet. Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
That sounds spot on. Have a fiddle with your fan profile in something like MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision to find the perfect balance of noise vs. temps.
Yup second hand 580s are hitting the sweet spot price wise now, anything between £165 - £185 for what is still an awesome card. I really should have edited this on to my previous post
