Hi im building my son his first gaming pc but on a budget and just wanted to check it see if ive got the right components or if i can get anything better or cheaper I already have a hard drive and os and for now he's going to use his tv for a monitor. AMD FX-4 4100 Black Edition 4 Core 3.6Ghz Socket AM3+ 8MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor £88.13 Asus M5A78L-M LX AMD Socket AM3+ onboard VGA 8 Channel HD Audio mATX Motherboard £37.95 Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz XMS3 Memory Kit CL9 unbuffered £20.86 Coolermaster Elite 330 Case With Coolermaster eXtreme Power 500W PSU £49.98 LiteOn iHAS124 24x DVD±RW DL & RAM SATA Optical Drive - OEM Black with Nero Essentials £14.99 Logitech MK120 Wired Slim Keyboard and Optical Mouse £12.00 PowerColor HD 7750 1GB GDDR5 DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card £86.30 Cart total inc vat: £310.21 I was looking at OcUK HD 6850 OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £89.99 inc VAT but will the psu handle it ? Any help would be appreciated
The 6850 will be well worth the extra outlay if you can afford it. While not a brilliant psu, that coolermaster one will handle the needs of a 6850. Looks like a pretty good build actually, for the money. Later on down the line, invest in an after market cooler for some overclocking headroom to eek out even more performance.
Thanks i was just wondering about the cooler it should come with a stock cooler as it's retail ? and i was looking at a freezer pro but not sure about the room in the case ?
Retail CPUs come with a stock fan. The Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro should fit in the case : I have a friend with that case and a similar size cooler. Sent from my Orange San Francisco using Tapatalk
Yep i'd save your money and put it towards the graphics to be honest. The main thing to take into account is the longevity of the build. It's worth spending a bit more on graphics now to save money down the line. What sort of games will he be playing? is the TV 720p or 1080p?
Why won't it overclock ? His tv is 22" 1280x720 and as for games maybe bf3 dc universe online star trek online cod
ah right, well at 720p he should be able to play pretty much anything on full with a 7750, thinking of the future it may be worth getting a better card to last longer, but i doubt he'll have a problem with current titles It will overclock, it just depends whether you are planning to or not. If you want to overclock a third party cooler will be needed. I must say I'm impressed with what you've managed to get for the money!
you are literally talking trash. I would call you a troll but I think you are serious. Ignore this guy OP. Definitely plump for the 6850. You won't regret it!
I would say buy a used HD HIS 5770 for the GPU cost around 50-60, i5 2500k around 160 new and maybe some other used stuff like mobo etc will defo come in at 300 or just over
Thanks i was quite impressed to the only thing im not happy about is the psu but it will do for now Thanks for all the feedback
Sorry and Edited. I think I got confused with this http://m.youtube.com/index?client=mv-google&desktop_uri=%2F&gl=GB&rdm=4ppwh3ffs#/watch?v=1Xk3UGHw7u4
You won't get much overclocking out of a £38 LX motherboard - bear that in mind. Q: Would an older Phenom II be faster then an FX?
Compared to the FX4100, yes. A 960T coupled with a board that can potentially unlock it would be an option. As would a FX6100 once you factor in the cashback offer. In both cases you will want a board with strong VRM components if you even think about overclocking. I personally wouldn't bother with the FX4100 at all. Another option would be the Core i3-2100 (20). No overclocking so any basic board will do - you just pay more for features. 8GB of memory and you are set for a gaming build. The only reason I didn't end up going down the SB route for my wife's build (see sig) is due to the fact that I already had the AM3 Motherboard.
Yea the i3 is already a 3.1G chip, which is fast enough for a light gamer and H67 or even H61 boards are cheap. Unless he can find a second hand P55 setup and do some OCing on that instead? I would consider FM1 maybe - stick with onboard GPU for now, then drop in a graphics card when you can afford one. Does a 7750 give more performance than a CrossFired 6670+A8 APU?
P55 might be worth a look if it is cheap althogh I would steer more towards a platform that can be upgraded in the future. A decent H61/H67 board should be able to take a Ivy Bridge CPU to give extra grunt in the future (or a 2500/2600K from someone upgrading to Ivy Bridge). Llano is also worth a look although you do "drop" to Athlon X4 levels of CPU performance. Whether this is a problem or not is up to the Op. A HD7750 will be faster than the Asynchronos CF on the A8 platform. From the reviews I have read it either peforms "ok" or not at all (like entry level CF/SLI in general). A HD6850 would be a better mid range GPU choice considering the price vs performance. The power consumption in the real world isn't much higher either.
I have also looked at the i3 setup and it's not that much more i just am on a proper budget As for overclocking i was planing on leaving it for a year till he has a bit more knowledge in the hole pc gaming stuff then teach him about overclocking Also the motherboard i was looking at said something a bios flash to run the fx chip does anyone know anything about this ? i did read that i would need another amd chip to flash the bios ? Thanks for the feedback
