i'd go i3. it's a hyper-thread enabled dual core and it seems to oc very well. sounds like the budget is coming in line for the build puresilver specced. not much else to be said.

Hi, I've just joined I'm folding for "the team" and building a new computer and would like a bit of advice, I have narrowed it down to two systems and would welcome comments please.

    1) AMD phenom 11 X4
MSI 790fx-gd70 mother board (I can put at least two PCIE X16 video cards in this so I have read).

    2) INTEL core i5 - 750
    ASUS P55M-UD4 mother board

Which will be the best for folding and general computing, I do not play games as I am "getting on a bit" and my reactions are not up to it. :wallbash: :D

The i5 750 will give you far superior performance. An overclocked i5 750 can also give you around 10,000 PPD.

Welcome. Check the build guide that bindi linked up. It has a Folding PC build. generally folding on the GPU is the fastest and most efficient way to get PPD. Id go with the board that can hold most GPU's. It doesn't matter if it drops to x16 x8 or x4 as Folding isn't bandwith sensitive. Also call in at the folding forum for more advice.

ONTOPIC: I would go with the athlon II x3 425/435 and avoid the athlon II x4 620 (unless you need a cheap quad) and Phenom II 550/555/720. If your willing to overclock the tri-cores are stellar. I would then invest in a faster card or other areas of the PC such as cooling, storage or a new monitor. I would also avoid the i3's for the same reason above. The next processor I would look at its the i5 750. Just my .02
