Thanks
I know of several people who have dell laptops and are very pleased with them. Maybe this is worth a look. Its not as well specced but should be very reliable.
how about this one? I'm surfing from the older model right now, and it's carried me through uni. With the spare change you could buy a bit more RAM, a decent mouse, the right wifi card and maybe a printer (always useful for deadline days, as i'm sure you're aware). My one (the nx9005) is v. quiet which is good for overnight downloading; it rarely gets hot so no toasted lap; and the sound is reasonable if a bit quiet. It's a little heavy but all lappys in this range tend to be. Also it's not a gaming machine (chuggs running anything more than Quake3 or Half-life1, so no UT2004 or NFSU sadly) but tbh that's not a bad thing whe you're trying to study... This one doesn't have a dvd burner but you could buy an external enclosure for £15 and stick a second HDD or DVD burner in as appropriate. HP seem to have their heads screwed on and i've had no problems with the software etc. p.s. it has shiny bl00 leds
Hi First of all STAY AWAY FROM ACER!!! Your better off with a pen and paper than a acer laptop :| Never seen a HP laptop, or read much about it so cant comment on the one above Higrade/advent laptops are great Toshiba seem to be a good make and my freind seems quite happy with the one he has (no idea on model cost around £500 tho)
Mind Explaining why? your not realy helping if you just shout something like 'INTEL SUCK!' and anyway, most people would want to know WhY they 'SUCK' so much?
Just read your suggestions and all the laptops suggested are around the same price and same spec. Thanks for the links and info. Also I agree with the above post, what is wrong with Acer laptops? I really wanna know now! My friend does have a Acer Inspire and that seems fine to me. But if there is something we should all know about Acer laptops please tell me. Cheers for the posts, and if anyone has any more suggestions please let me know, am thinking about purchasing one next month so I have a little time to think about which one i want.
the acers are quite shabby in build quality.. I have a HP NX9005 (the manly 2500+ xp-m) which only letme down once with a power supply issue. HP sent a courier to collect the laptop.. replaced all the innards and threw in a new battery and power supply. Even though it was out of warrenty... that's customer service. Btw: my HP is for sale because i want a tablet pc now... if you're interested that is
I notice a couple of people have bad opinions on Acers but to me they seem cheap and have good specs for the price. I found another Acer for £410 Just wondered do people think it is any good: http://www.technoworld.com/productdisplay.asp?ProductID=220-246-1365&source=dealtime
i'd advise against a toshiba, i know three people with them, and 2 out of those 3 have had problems with them, one of them being terminal motherboard failue!!!!! The dells, and even better, IBM's are built like tanks, and can survive student life pretty easily. Unfortunately like everything in life you generally have to pay more, or get less, if you want quality.
I'd personally go to PCWorld just to have a look at the laptops they have on display and see whether you like them. Write a few down and do some research on the Internet. Personally, I'd definately go for an iBook. Unfortunately they are slightly out of your budget even with the educational discount which brings the 12" G4 iBook to around £650. You might be able to pick a G4 iBook for around £500 on ebay. I do recommend Dells, but I would say stay clear of the acers from experience.
you could do that and add another 256mb stick in, as only 256mb normally begins to strugle after a while with an xp install... i dunno i would be realy instrested in it, although many people seem to have bad opinons about them... depends if you want to risk it? Edit: an ibook would be nice
Just to let you know that after days of thinking about the pro's and con's of each laptop in my £500 budget i decided to go for the Acer Travelmate 2300 series. And it seems to be a very stable system. The 512mb RAM has proven to be useful and so far so good have had no problems. Battery life claims to be 2hours but it seems you can only reach this with LCD set to lowest brightness, CPU set to lowest work speed and if you only use Word and no other software. but to be honest, most places i will go will have a plug socket near by. Connected the laptop to my LAN and it works great have yet to buy a wireless router but when i do that will be good. I reccommend this laptop to anyone who needs a laptop for office work or who is a student on a budget, its very good value for money!!
