Ok first sorry if this seems like a pirate whinging that he wants his illegal films faster its not, 02 in their so called infinite wisdom have decided to speed cap ALL p2p connections.

So torrents limited fair enough however this limit also includes steam downloads, certain online games, skype, vent etc it wouldn't be to bad if they dropped the speed down to say 1MB during busy periods I could live with that I pay for a connection that's up to 8MB but i could possibly live with a slower speed at certain times I'd just adjust when I play games or talk to people but 1MB for them would be generous they seem to have limited it between 5-10KBs that's not each that's total which in its self is disgusting but prior to reading up on their speed throttling I reset the router restarted computer etc and rang their help line (early today) at which the point the oh so every well trained person at the end of the line told me that it was slower because it was the holiday season and that the "internet" needed time to adjust as more people were using it.

So short of finding the o2 offices and committing an unpleasant act of horrendous violence on the person i spoke to with said act involving a roll of barbed wire,a baseball bat, 3 gallons of marmalade and Paddington Bear I have decided that I'll start looking into other isps that are not so slow so any suggestions would be helpful.

It is a pity however because until they started this so called traffic management lark they were a good isp that I would have recommended to any one.

WTF really? Parents are on O2 and I was torrenting about 2 weeks ago and it seemed fine! Was it a recent thing? If so, this is going to kill their user base, I can't imagine people are going to be happy about their bandwidth being crippled.

I would email them and say that you are going to change ISP because of their "traffic management lark " and that you would rather become a victim of violence involving a roll of barbed wire, a baseball bat, 3 gallons of marmalade and a Paddington Bear than continue using their broken and inefficient service.

Hmm, my Steam downloads are a few hundred KB/sec less than normal, but that's still 900KB/sec so I don't think they're being throttled, the Steam servers are probably just under increased load due to the sales.

I don't use torrents that often and when I do they rarely saturate my bandwidth so I haven't noticed any difference there.

Same here, I'm with O2 on an 8MB line and was happily downloading at 814Kb/s on steam today no problem. Never really use torrents tbh but if what you say is true then I may consider switching providers myself.

it started in December if you look at certain internet forums you will find that there are numerous threads with 15 plus pages in each of people complaining about the traffic management that they have brought in its poorly thought out and they've tried to slip it in quietly thinking no one would complain.

I requested a MAC key from Plusnet just yesterday to move to O2...eurgh. Is this for everyone or is it ok for LLU'd connections?

From what I can tell it only affects the O2 Home Access package, i.e. the one that's provided using BT Wholesale rather than their LLU network. As long as you're on a LLU package then you should be fine.

Doesn't appear so, haven't had any notification from Be about anything like it and there's nothing on their forums. Would be unlikely anyway given that O2 only seem to be using traffic management on the network they operate thru BT Wholesale.

Sounds alright as I'm in an LLU area - I'm not a downloader but if there's any problems then I'll no doubt be using the 30-day cooling off policy.

It's probably not O2's fault - in non-LLU areas I'd bet BT are putting their foot down about traffic management. It happens here every day atm - from 10am to midnight our connection is neutered to ~1.6Mb BB, after the stroke of midnight we go back up to 6.8Mb (8Mb BB). Sucks living without LLU.

O2 have been pretty strict with the traffic management on the Access package lately. I'm not surprised though, as they probably have to pay BT a fortune for the bandwidth.

I switched over to O2 LLU 2 days ago from Sky and it's brilliant!
