If they can get 100GB on a disc with a red laser, just think what they can do with a blue one, Normal DVD = 4.7GB / Blue DVD = 27GB, factor = 5.7... 570GB on a standard optical disc...
I know. i've been wondering when they will incorporate both of these tecnologies in one product. It's mind boggling.
Since no one has yet utilised the entire 17GB capacity of a Double sided, dual-layer DVD, this would seem to be unecessary really.... Sure, it's progress, but sometimes I feel it is better to make use of what we have a little more.
True., true. But, just think of the storage uses for things like backing up servers and whatnot. I mean there a tape back-ups in the terabites. I have around 300 CDRs floating aroudn my room. it would be great to have it only on a couple of disks (but one scratch on the disk and life ends, huh?).
Movies use the 8ishGB dual layer capacity of DVDs, dual sided is a pain (flip it?). 500GB on a single side... DVD-A/SACD quality audio, high resolution, uncompressed video, multiple camera angles, etc...
Of course, but the music industry is already afraid of the capacity of DVD-A. I'm sure we will see this happen, and there will be uses for it, but as a consumer media right now, I am not so sure.
dvdwrite and rewrite still has some way to go before it will work out nicely and cheaply enough for people to have in their home pcs and that...
True, but as each new technology comes out, the one before it drops drastically in price, so I look forward to being able to afford a dvd burner.
I look forward to True-X burners, The max they reckon with current DVD tech is about 4x, which is fine, but not particularly quick (about 5.2 MB/s)! True-X could extend that to say 10x or faster (13+ MB/s), which would make the process of burning a 4.7GB DVD a lot less painful, I personally am interested in holographic storage, with multi terabit sizes mentioned,
wow, 100GB op disks. this could be a BIG problem for DVD being ripped. When people get hold of disks this size, there will be much higher quality rips going around because these disks will support there size. as some one mentioned, it would be nice storage media. you could use these as friggin hard drives ! lol. .icecube
Yeah, C3D have already got 1 Tb on a disc. As far as I know, double-sided DVD's don't have to be flipped over... its just the colour of the light used changes, so goes onto the second layer. C3D use the same principle. They have stacks of disc's which use flourescent light instead of reflective light, meaning that they can have huge stacks of disc's and the colour of the light simply changes. I think thats the 'jist' of it. As for not using the full disc, as someone rightly said, server rooms have stacks and stacks of AIT library's storing a few Tb of information. Now imagine these huge stores being replaces by two devices the size of a game cube! And think how good it would be to have your HDD as a CD, which you could hot-swap! I personally can't wait!
