the WD seems faster to me. maybe i'm imagining it cos I'm a bit sentimental and my WD has done me proud but it just seems a bit nippier around windows XP, opening explorer windows + the like.

:hip: Cool. I've got 4 HDs split across 2 PCs here at home ... Maxtor 7200-2 80GB, Seagate 7200-2 120GB, Hitachi 7200-2 160GB and Maxtor SATA 7200-8 120GB. Outside of benchmarks and timing I don't notice any remotely tangible difference between them. I guess as is often the case with PC components, in reality there's very little between them all so we come down to very picky tiny differences. If I had the choice between BrandA (top HD manu) with 1 year warranty and 'lesser' brand with a 3 year warranty for MORE money I'd take the 3 year one every time ... unless it's overly noisy (v.important to me) or a Hitachi (2/3 dead in 9 months is not a good sign).

For what it's worth, I know a medium sized comp manufacturer in the uk that uses a pretty even mix of WD and Maxtors, although, now I think about it, that just means they're cheap and will last at least a year. Personally, I've got a Hitachi 80Gb SATA, and it runs about the same speed (ie only a benchmark will notice a difference) and a lot quieter than my maxtors.
I'd agree with Austin tho and say go for who ever gives you the longest warrenty.
After all, I'm sure you can find 10 people on these forums who will swear blind that (eg) WD is the best and most reliable etc. and another 10 who will slag em off. In the end, some hard drives are gonna be dud's, and some are going to be troopers, the only way to get ahead is have a good warrenty,
    just my opinion though, natch

    I've got a 120gb 8mb cache, love it, but i also have the maxtor 120gb 8mb also...

i haven't had problems with either.

my friend uses all WD drives (3 of them) and no problems. I have 2 other WD drives (no problems) and i just ordered another one. (80gb 8mb)

So really unless you are really unlucky...then you will have no problems :)

i've got two of those bad boys, one gets abused quite as its used as a scratch file for any ripping / video editing and the other is for os.

I can't fault the drives they are fast and have had no problems with them (touch wood). The only complain I have is that 120 isn't big enough anymore :waah:

but no would deffinatly recomend them :thumb:

oh yea i switched 4 case fans out for vantech tornados. my system runs at 33C under full load. Also does about 25C idle. My thermal probes say 23C is my case temp so i guess im doing good.

It's what came in a dell system that I bought some time ago. Indeed, a free upgrade from 30GB IIRC :) It's currently in my brother's computer and not causing any problems. I can't hear it at all either.

Of course you won't hear hard drives over tornados. But I can't hear my dual raptor + 80gb Seagate SATA setup over my SilenX fans and PSU, except not very noticibly during write operations.

;) While on the topic of HDs it's well worth noting that Seagate offer a 5 year warranty on ALL their HDs. Almost all other companies only give 1 year with the odd exception (ie top-end) which is 3 year. Seagate are well known for reliable HDs that are quiet and cool running. If you're buying I'd definitely suggest Seagate, in fact I wouldn't consider touching anythig else at the mo.

Ive got 7 of the WD1200 8mb drives here and they are excellent - couldnt fault them.

Seagate - wouldnt touch way too many problems over the years and besides they are made in Londonderry :worried:
