Considering dumping my 11" MacBook Air in favour of something a big beefier but still portable. Considering the Dell XPS 13, but I'd really like an optical drive (the lack of one on the Air something my OH constantly takes digs at, and most of the time she's right).

I'm not too fussed about the "Ultrabook" label, so anything with the following specs would do:

    • 13/14" 1080p display
    • SSD (around 256GB)
    • Portable and light (i.e. not a brick)
    • 4-8GB RAM
    • Mini-DP out (so I can keep my current Apple adaptors)
    • £900-1000
    • Aforementioned optical drive

I know it's a conflicting set of requirements, but there has to be something out there?

have you considered a USB optical drive? you can get very small portable ones that don't need external power. i have a very small LG one that works pretty well

you could get a base model 13" macbook pro retina and an external optical drive, but the SSD will only be 128GB and you'll still be over budget by £150 or so

1080p displays in that size are pricey, 256GB SSDs are pricey, and optical drives are getting rarer. you might need to kick your budget up a bit
