Hey all just wondering what the general concencious is. I've ordered a dell u2311h and I'm having second thoughts, just wondering if everyone feels its worth the investement to move from my current resolution 1680*1050 to 1920*1080.

Anyone else made the move recently?

I recently built a new (non gaming) SB rig for a friend and it included a BenQ G2222HDL 1920x1080 monitor. Of course I had to make sure it was working okay :D so I "tested" it with my own gaming rig on BC2 and Dirt2 for about a week and a half.

It wasn't like a "wow" moment but I liked the extra screen real estate. However the really noticeable difference was when I went back to my 1680x1050 Samsung, I really noticed that - it felt much, much smaller. It has taken me a few weeks to get used to my old monitor again.

I think with a U2311H you can't go wrong. If you are moving from a lesser quality monitor then that alone should justify the upgrade, not just the additional pixels.

    What are you upgrading from?

I've currently got a fujitsu siemens l22w-5, its a TN panel.

Tbh I was more worried that I wouldnt really notice the difference in resolutions between the two monitors and would feel as if it wasnt worth the cost

    1680 ---> 1920 - Not a massive difference.

TN ---> IPS - HUGE difference.

Don't worry about it, it's an excellent monitor and I'd be very surprised if you were disappointed by it.

You'll notice a massive different between TN and IPS. Your eyes will thank you! Interesting question on the real estate though, good ask as I'm about to make this move up from a Dell Ultrasharp 22" 1680*1050 and can only see two options worth considering at this budget range:

dell u2311h as GillJoy is doing, or Viewsonics VP2365wb which Bit-tech seem to rate more highly than any other monitor, so much so that CPC called off their monitor lab-test (source is somewhere, but I can't find it), but that was prior to the price drop on the Dell.
    • Bit-tech states that the Viewsonic is an e-IPS panel, though I'm not sure where this has come from (and not to be confused with E-IPS apparently), where as Dell does not, but it does so with older monitors?
    • Dell's 23" in question has display-port which Viewsonic's does not. Which could be a useful future proofing consideration, Eyefinity... maybe...
    • And Four USB are only really two if you forget about the two tucked away at the back which are pretty inaccessible for regular use despite the monitors swivelling capabilities.

The quoted response time is no use in comparison I guess. The Dell, 8ms says grey-to-grey V 14ms "typical" on the viewsonic? But is there a noticeable difference or not? I think would only be evident in side-by-side test (cmon Bit-tech you know you want to). There doesn't seem to be much between their stands, other than aesthetics....

Despite bit-tech's glowing recommendation of the Viewsonic, I've faith in Dell's monitors, having had two for the past few years and been very satisfied with them both... but if there was a monitor lab-test perhaps I'd be convinced otherwise...?

It does make a reasonable difference. Definitely requires a fair bit more oomph in the graphics department. It's not like you're jumping from 640x480 to 1600x1200 or anything, but it makes things slightly nicer, gives you a little more real estate, and is generally just a little more right.

I would only say yes if accompanied with a screen size increase (going from 1650 22inch to a 1920 24inch was worth it, but I wouldn't have gone to a 1920 22inch, not worth the money in my eyes)

after my failed attempt at stripping the anti-glare coating on my samsung @1680, i got a temporary monitor @1920 to use while i continue researching on monitors in the +2500 range. even though i got a value display (aoc razor) it is still a huge improvement over the old samsung i was using. and from what i've heard about the dell ips monitors you made a very good choice there.

yea, tbh im more worried that the fact the dell may actually look smaller than my current monitor as its going from 16:10 to 16:9.

In two minds wither or not to cancel this order or not

    16:10 Cheesecake :D
I mistook my friends 27inch 16:9 for a 24 because it didn't look that big.

But the only reason to cancel is to upgrade to a bigger IPS like the u2410, but that it twice the price :/

u2311 is a good buy. Don't cancel unless you have a spare £400.

Not sure about going from 1680 > 1920, but I went from 4:3 1280x1024 19" TN to a 24" 1920x1200 IPS and it was like an orgasm for my eyes.

The u2311h is a great monitor, as someone else has stated - I doubt you will be dissapointed.

I currently use a 30" 1920x1080 HD TV as a monitor, and I am thinking of upgrading to a u2311h.

Picture quality is more important than screen size

Yup, it's the movement, not the size that matters....:worried:

you didn't say where you purchased it from, but if you got it from dell direct, they offer the try out period do they not? if you have the try out period, i would let it arrive, and make the decision then.

Definitely worth it, i upgraded from a 16:10 monitor to 1920 x 1080 a while back and even though physically the new one is slightly smaller, the extra pixels make a difference. Worth it if you have a GTX570 to run it on too.
