Hi there... I am looking to build a system based around the i7 2600k, and I will primarily use it for Photoshop and Battlefield 3... I make some panoramas with a 21Mp DSLR, so I guess I would need something like 16Gb of RAM just in case... but I am confused by Dual Channel memory... the intel Z68 motherboards support Dual Channel DDR3, but have 4 slots... Can I buy a set of 4x 4Gb, or do I need to track down some 2x 8Gb RAM? any help would be great! Will
You can use both! But 2 x 8Gb kits are a bit more expensive So this is a 4 x 4gb kit http://www.scan.co.uk/products/16gb...pc3-12800-(1600)-non-ecc-cas-9-9-9-24-xmp-15v and a 2 x 8gb kit http://www.scan.co.uk/products/16gb...-(1600)-non-ecc-unbuffered-cas-10-10-10-27-xm
As batman above says you can use 4x4gb RAM (or quad channel memory) i did the exact same thing with the RAM i have (see sig) they were listed as quad channel RAM but they work fine. Its the motherboard is what determines if its dual or quad not the RAM
Is there any RAM not suitable for a Z68 motherboard, assuming it has the correct number of pins and is DDR3 etc. Is it possible to buy some DDR3 RAM which will fit into the slot but not operate correctly? Just asking in case it is actually possible to buy something that will not work Itchy
Thanks for clearing that up! I will probably get a 4x 4Gb kit as it is cheaper... now I just need to decide on my motherboard and save up the last few pennnies
Pretty much any DDR3 RAM you buy new these days should be fine. In the early days of DDR3 there was some AMD DDR3 which ran at 1.8V which wasn't safe for Intel boards, however all the RAM I've seen lately has been 1.65V maximum which is fine (even though some people say 1.5V for socket 1155, that's just if you want to be super safe and careful).
i really like the ram in my sig but i know that speed isnt necessary apart from if you like to win in benchmarks
