I'm after my first TFT - 17" with a budget of £210 MAX.

    Here's what I've found:

    Sony SDM-S74S £210 16ms, DVI, sweet lookin'
    Acer AL1722HS £202 DVI fast 8ms!

DVI would be nice, but not 100% essential
Looking for decent responce time, e.g. 8 - 16 but I know it's not an exact science
And gotta look nice! (most do)

What you think of those ones? Any suggestions?

    Cheers

Well the LG L1740P looks like my best bet - funky looks , DVI, 12ms, I must be on to a winner

Then again it's a bit pricey so maybe the L1750H is the better option - also 12ms DVI

... I'm still open to suggestions.

;) It's practically all marketing, an 8ms panel may be no better than a GF-6200 with 512MB. We saw this when the first panels < 25ms came out which is just as LCDs began hitting the mainstream. Back then there were only essentially 2 panels; 16ms and 20ms and both were virtually the same just measured in a slightly different way. With specs and profit margins what they are in 2005 it's easy to see how things have escalated from that point. Check those 8ms and you'll surely find it is 8ms rising (B->W) and 8ms falling (W->B) which is another way of stating 16ms.

:duh: Response is one of the biggest selling points of LCDs. Only measuring B->W->B (Black to White to Black) is clearly too simplistic and not relative to real world usage. For this reason G->G (dark grey to light grey) are being measured too, which is more representative of real world usage (but unfortunately makes 16ms quoted as 8ms easier). Overdrive is a key technology which significantly speeds up G->G but does nothing for B->W->B. There's too much FUD to trust the quoted specs, look for trusted reviews & users' experiences. Contrast, brightness & especially viewing angles aren't often measured or quoted fairly either. For example a contrast ratio of only 10:1 was all that was needed for an LCD to quote as 'viewable' when in reality it sucks really bad. It seems the industry is changing this awful minimum to just 5:1 in order to quote better viewing angle figures, pathetic! 100:1 is often considered a realistic minimum 'viewable'. Think very carefully before placing the emphasis on specs.

:eeek: In truly speeding up response there always seems to be trade-offs, esp for the fastest response panels. For example you should expect to sacrifice the range of colours (not true 24bit / 16.7 million), colour accuracy, viewing angles and movies in particular show up dithering AND can have a nasty (and increasingly common) 'twinkling' effect. Bottom line is that most people should not see ghosting on any LCD with a REAL response below 21ms, if you get under 16ms all the better so long as you aren't sacrificing too much for it (and are really getting < 16ms). Most of the panels with the faster responses only offer 262 Thousand actual colours, they're often quoted as "16.2 million" due to unimpressive (but marketable) dithering. There really isn't any substitute for truly having 16.7 Million actual colours.

:thumb: There are currently only 3 mainstream panel types; TN (fast response but never 24bit), VA (wide view angles & true colours) and IPS (tries to sit inbetween but mostly offers both downsides). The Viewsonic VP191B uses the latest VA panel (by AU Optronics) and is a world away from all the others from what I hear. There should be other brands using this panel very soon, if what I've heard is true then I wouldn't consider any other panel.

Oi watch your mouth :grr: . no-one wants a good looking piece of crap now do they? I consider both.
Anyway, I would have got the LG L1780U if it wasn't more than that 1740P - I can't see much difference between the two other than look, apart from "DAFI technology" on 1740P, and rotating screen on 1780U

LG L1780U looks verreh nice! Seem to be popular and about £20 more than the 1740P (which also looks nice, too!)

I must admit, if I were to ever upgrade from my LG 1715S, I'd go for another LG.

I just took delivery of a Benq 17" with DVI - won't be testing it till tomorrow as going on a TFT arm later.

Delivered cost was £148 approx (I paid £190ish cos I bought a 160gb HD @ 42 quid!) from Savastore - not a company I normally deal with - but as both items 3 years warranty with manufacturer what the heck!
