Surely the HP is S/H-IPS? do you mean the 2408WFP?

Looks like a nice monitor certainly, for that money though im going to be wanting more screen real estate. The HP is certainly winning my student loan at the moment.

We used the HP as an example of a great screen for around £400, but yes, you're right, the HP is based on H-IPS not PVA.

Ok thanks, the wording in that last paragraph is rather confusing though, it seems like you are stating the HP is PVA

Yeah, I've changed it to eliminate that confusion. Thanks for flagging it!

All I would be looking for is a decent quality 1080p TN monitor. Somthing like very even back lighting with deep blacks for a small premium and I would snap it up. Until then I'll be sticking to my old 1440x900 19 incher.

The BenQ G2220HD that I did in CPC last issue was pretty good for £130 - TN, so still muted colours and not great contrast, but good for the price.

Any chance of getting reviews of 30 inch monitors soon?

Well...if you're serious about the first quote: why don't you just go ahead and test an affordable LCD panel? Any affordable LCD panel, really. Haven't seen a single one around here.

Not perfect-class material, nonono, just as you named it, an affordable panel.
    Maybe a 22" and a 24".
And define them by the word "affordable" as in el-cheapo and not as in "well worth it's (heap of) money"

I realize there's a lot of demand for high-class panels out there, and its-the-thing-youll-look-at-most and all that, but you're catering to that audience allready.
Just test some cheap panels once! ;-)

They've tested loads! They all have the conclusion "its fairly cheap but due to the TN panel the colours are a bit pants so we would go for something else unless your budget doesnt allow you too"
Though they haven't done so many 24"...

I really like the high res on a smaller screen - its nice to have the resolution but you can't always find the space.

    I'm still rocking my 18" S-IPS..

NEC + Eizo are still the top dogs, although the price is ungodly.

If Im going to spend 800+ for a 22" might as well spend a bit more and go for the DoubleSight 30" LCD with a H-IPS Panel for $1200us, thats what I own and its an amazing screen and awesome response but it is nice to see this tech showing up in smaller screens, Im hoping better screens over TN will become the norm because my god the colors that we are missing on TN panels is insane its like night and day on an H-IPS panel, everything looks just so much better and even the details are cleaner, PVA panels too have a great color range.

Possibly the best(although sadly with a very weird size) monitor in terms of color gamut is the NEC 2690WUXi.

true but in terms of price alone I think Doublesight takes it on that.

Sadly after being used to the Mitsubishi DiamondTron CRTs and the NEC Multisyncs...

Eizo is the only other option.. :D

    When I get a beefier GPU though, I might consider a 2408WFP or a LP2475w.

TBH we have a 24" with a native of 1920x1200, and at that resolution the screen txt is slightly too small to be comfortable. We tend to run the monitor at 1680x1050.

This makes things slightly blurry around the edges (not enough to notice though unless you are being picky) compared to the native res, but at least we are not getting eye strain.

I'd hate to think what txt is like at that res on a 22" screen.

Should be fine if you up the DPI. That can cause problems elsewhere, though (text not fitting in its window in one or two applications, that sort of thing) so I've stopped doing it on my 24" 1920x1200 and got used to the smaller text. Am I right in thinking that Windows 7 has some improvements in that area though?
