a lot for a video game but not alot compared tot he overall military budget

can go some way to showing how bad military spending on projects balloons and how our guys out there should have better gear than they do if things are costing alot more than they should

And here in sunny Britain, we take a very different approach...

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/6735831.stm

Not content with castrating the budget on equipment & training, we're also not allowed to tell kids that there's more to the military/security services than big guns & lots of crawling in the mud.....and yet we expect more of them now than we ever did before.

33 mil. Wow. That could quite possibly give every serving US soldier in afghanistan a week's holiday somewhere nice.

I used to play America's Army when it first came out. It was one of my favourite online FPS at the time but since they started the special forces rubbish I've been less and less interested.

I wonder how many hellicopter's you can get with $33.000.000????

Still if the armey actually "make" money from the game then I suppose that could go towards some better kit to keep our lads from dieing needlessly!!!

Errr, 1? Half of 1? Not sure how much they cost but they ain't cheap.

33 mil is peanuts in the military budget. In the games world you would expect a lot more after 5 years and 33 mil than the buggy rubbish that it is currently.

**EDIT: According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_helicopter they cost $18mil so nearly 2 of those! I stand corrected. 2 and a bit of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackhawk_helicopter**

2 maybe lol everything to do with the military

this is such at tiny tiny portion of the over all budget it isnt really relivant. the us military budget was $564 billion (this is a figure i found if its wrong its close) and in 2008 they spent 3.8 million, 0.00067% of the overall budget. the overall figure doesnt relate to anything its just an interesting figure

the game is free to pay is it not? i thouht the idea was to get kids interested in the army and up recruitment numbers

The question is: "How much marketing can you get for $33 mil?" The answer is not that much. The game is a recruiting tool for the military. As such, it's a pretty cost-effective venture. The should have probably spent a bit more and fixed all the bugs in AA3 to get their money's worth.

Probably about one. Maybe three quarters.

War is fought on a totally different budget to the rest of the world.

For $33 Million they could have paid Activision and IW to add some DLC into MW2. This could lead to a real life test in I-rack to see if bunny hopping and jump+prone+shoot really can kill anybody.

yeh thats it. its tarageting exactly the age group they are interested in, as apposed to paying for ads that are seen by ppl that wouldnt be recruited anyway.

from all the stuff ive done by accident in games online i dont think theyd want me lol

33 mil for a game developed over 9 years really isn't that much. Especially since the game has been playable for 7 years. Some titles have 60 million dollar budgets for one release. This is probably one of the most cost efficient areas of the military. A standard marketing campaign probably would have cost far more to achieve the same results that AA potentially could.

You are actually onto something. Call of Duty probably is a more effective recruiting tool than the military's own game.

How many people have they recruited because of this?
How much would that recruiting have cost by other means?

It's not that much really. ;-)

One JSF delivered this year cost's about 200 million$ so....
