the 920's are limited to 20x, so as this article said, to hit 4Ghz or higher requires more than just a good CPU chip.

yes, i am aware there's turbo mode tweak on most motherboards that bumps max multiplier to 21x for 920 (and 22x for 930) but you got to realise that it's turbo mode with added voltage. when i was testing my 860 (max to 21x) with turbo mode v1 enabled at 22x, there was a huge amount of voltage automatically added, and it wasn't stable with higher temperature than non-turbo overclock at the same speed.

I understand the 930 has a slightly higher multiplier which, helps with the O/C however; this is the only difference. They are both fantastic chips but if i had the choice i would get the newer.

Ha! There are plenty of people on the forums who have bought a 930 to replace their 920, only to find that they couldn't reach their previous overclocking record!

Better buy is the newer chip. But if you wanted to save £50 pounds you really wouldn't be missing out on an appreciable difference in performance.

"You can pick up a 920 for around £170 for the usual UK retailers, whereas the 930 will set you back £50 more, around £230."

Anyone else spot a basic maths fail? And yes I know you've probably rounded the two prices and the difference is probably closer to £50 than £60 but it just looks daft! :p

My 930 hits 4GHz+ with much more ease than my 920 does, but as always YMMV.

Same price if it wasn't for the temporary sale on the 920.

Prices never transfer perfectly, but it's strange that you guys are seeing such a huge difference. Just doing a strait currency change it ends up being UK 920=$245, US 920/930=$290, UK 930=$330.

There's a big price difference in the UK at the moment because a load of 920s from Europe got dumped here a short while ago. Strictly speaking they are grey imports, not that I think most end-users care about that sort of thing.

Sorry to be a bit of a dunce here but what do you mean by that? I am relatively new to upgrading and building my own, I was looking into the whole 920 v 930 thing myself and was opting maybe for 920 to save a bit but not so sure now:confused:

Grey imports are goods that are not intended for distribution in a certain regions, still legal though so nothing to worry about.

    I own both chips

    4.2ghz on 920
    4.05ghz on 930

Water cooling both same mobo same memory. My 980 does 4.8ghz on water for comparison

And in my world the 930 is in a server at 3.4ghz and my mam got my 920 declocked to 3.4ghz also

    980 destroys all

    I'm a newbie that struggled with my 860 but with the 930 - I'm now at 4.2Ghz.

Hmm, I struggled with this same dilemma about a month ago. I decided to buy a 920 as it was significantly cheaper (And was available in an OEM variant, which suited me perfectly as I was buying a third-party cooler with it). From the details I've seen, it looks like I have bought some kind of overclocking monster chip.

My i7-920 (D0 stepping specifically, from Aria for £155) reaches 4ghz (200x20) on stock core voltage. It reaches 4.48 stable (megahalems air) with 1.34v. At this voltage and speed, the chip gets extremely hot (touching 85C), so I do not run it like this (I run it at 4ghz). I'm certain I'm also being limited by the fact that I am running 6 ram modules and have to bump QPIVTT significantly to run all 6 at their rated speeds of 1600mhz 8-7-7-24.

I'm wondering if this is just me getting lucky, or if BT.net has some "unremarkable" 920's in-house? I would love to have my chip tested by you guys, but I would have no machine to use in the mean time. :)

At the moment get the 920, you would be a fool not to want to save £60. When the 920's sell out the choice won't exist anymore and you'll have to get the 930.
