Hi, im buying a White Macbook next week And ive been looking for a replacement hard drive for it but i cant find anything above 160GB, i want a 200GB one but i cant afford to pay apples upgrade prices, anyone know where i can find one? (UK)
thanks for the reply but i dont want to have to carry around something extra + i need a huuuge hard drive as its going to be used for HD video editing and also i would like to install windows on it.
I just checked Seagate, Western Digital, Fujitsu, Maxtor and Samsung, none of them make anything above 160GB. I think the reason you can't find them is that they don't exist. I'm not certain, but have you ever actually seen one?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822149059 As far as I can tell, that's the only one on the market, and presumably the one Apple installs. However, with 160GB drives running around $170(£85), you have to ask yourself if another 37GB (once corrected for manufacturer GB vs real GB) is worth almost $100(£50).
the better question would be, why in god's name are you getting something with onboard video to do video editting?
toshiba does 200gb sata portable drives afair, also, there's a rumour that fujitsu is going to release perpendicular 300gb 2.5 sata drive in january
because video editing is a really processor intensive task and barely touches the graphics card (unless you're doing stuff in apple motion or after effects). if you arent doing any kind of 3d rendering its much more cost efficient to go for a macbook over a macbook pro - same beasty processor, nice and portable.
only the pro systems architectures are designed and optimized for graphic, video & music editting. not to mention most software suites for graphics and video still haven't been released as universal binaries, so they don't run at their most efficient under rosetta...
buy a desktop? that woudl be a good idea! no nice looking laptops tho thye are good, dec proc and v gd for wat u need it for! nice one! CLICK BUY
The Macbook is a great little machine even for running Pro apps like Final Cut (which is Universal.) No for Motion. As for the topic I would recommend an external drive for editing though. Fast, cheap and straightforward. Although you cannot use it to boot windows (why do you want to!)
The 200GB HDD, even though it has 8Mb cache is only 4200RPM! Far better with a smaller 7200RPM disk for video editing surely? I'm not sure since I'm no video editor but all the posts I read about video editing recommend raid 0 for increase disk throughput.
