Wait, wait! Does this mean no more Samsung Spintpoint drives, or are they just getting a new name?

 

2x 1tb platters, internal raid of some sort = epic perfomance?

 

I've asked Seagate about that, and they're currently refusing to comment. I'm guessing it'll take a while for things to settle down and for Seagate to decide exactly what they're doing.

 

1TB platters...oh baby! This paves they way for massive storage. Lovely.

 

1TB platters and a 1.5TB HDD? Seems stupid to me.
Still can't wait for performance & price information on these.

 

This might make up for potentially taking away my beloved Spinpoints..

 

Will presumably be the same deal as those excellent WD drives, with a 1TB platter plus a one-sided 1TB platter. Same areal density, so same high performance, but at a lower cost.

Where's the five platter 5TB drive that would have been the cherry on this story's cake? It's good news until you realise the only sizes being released are ones we already have. I hate waiting.....

 

Or even just a 4TB 4 platter drive?

 

It is not Seagate. Samsung IS the first company with 1TB platters. Seagate just bought company which came forward with this invention and now they trying to fool people that they developed something new.

Weeks before takeover it was reported that Samsung developed 1TB platters.

Anyway, lets return to 5.25" HDDs. Slap 20 such platters inside and have fun. I still do own couple SCSI 600 MB hard disks from early '90s (as paper weight mostly, but still some -amazingly- working). Big like a tank. Why not return to that idea. 1 big 5.25" [2U] disk with 20TB inside. I can see already all storage-whores drolling! Lolz

A bigger drive surface area would only worsen seek times and random reads/writes + cases are built for 3.5"

Maybe for media/storage though.

 

It probably takes them 4-5 months to do the branding and marketing alone on a new drive ... this is Seagate tech, not Samsung. It'll be 12 months at least before Samsung is integrated into Seagate and will probably start with the Samsung bits still making the drives with labels that look identical to now but with Seagate stuck over where it said Samsung before. Chances are it'll be the next range (possibly but one) where they merge.. so think Seagate Spinpoint F7 or so. F6s are way too close to release for this deal to have any effect on those so they'll be 100% Samsung.

Having said that, much of the tech for platters and the write heads is bought in from third parties ... though I remember WD buying one of those suppliers a year or so ago to try to bring it all in house (Seagate may be in the same position given their size).

 

im guessing those drives will generate alot of heat and will hog alot of power to get all those platters spinning inside to reach the read/seek times that most drives are doing today
