Graphics 22/23 GPU Thread - RTX4000 AND RX7000 Series

Hearing rumours Nvidia could be headed back to Samsung for their 3nm.

This could be very good, or depending on the % of greed rise by Nvidia next round also very bad.

Let’s just hope that it brings prices back down to 30 series level and makes things a bit more affordable and not Nvidias way of pushing up to 90% profit.

 

I wonder if this is a capacity issue with the other fabs. I got the impression that was why Ampere went ahead with Samsung 8nm, and why efficiency wasn't exactly stellar on 30 series.

Yeah, no. Nvidia aren't even bothered about hiding it any more.

 

I think it will be solely based on the price tbh.

Apparently TSMC are shoving their prices up a further 15% next gen. I would also imagine Nvidia paid a heavy price for the 40 series dies, given they F-ed off for the 30 series and apparently had to get back in line.

Edit. In the same article they said that currently the success rate on Samsung 3nm is 50%. Which they think is why Nvidia have stalled the 50 series til next year.

 

It wouldn't surprise me if Nvidia did go ahead at that yield, they've already shown just how willing they are to keep screwing people on prices.

 

Well in fairness the 30 series at RRP were cheaper than the 20 series. Like, much cheaper. So even though they took a big wad in profit they at least passed some of the saving onto the buyer. I mean, 50% sounds a bit crap but I am also aware yields on the 30 series were terrible also. So that could actually be good for all I know.

Yeah I agree though they will take any chance to be even greedier than they are already. I just think it would be a bit stupid is all. I had absolutely no problem with the RRP on Ampere. None at all, and I wish they had stayed with Samsung tbh. I mean, if they had? I would highly likely have three Nvidia cards now and not 3 AMD.

 

No, to be fair the 3000-series wasn't actually that bad. The bigger problem was that you couldn't actually buy the damn things

 

Pretty much, the price they were supposed to be wasn't that bad but the trickle feed of supply and scalpers meant that was very rarely their price.

 

iirc nv went samsung bc the yields were bad [at least initially] and samsung were basically giving nvidia wafers to avoid getting sued... and even for Amperes the top end datacentre **** [GA100] was TSMC N7

plus iirc there was an element of nvidia saying 'we'll go to a competitor if you don;t give us a good deal' and TSMC going 'ok then... door's over there...' [and subsequently meant TSMC had nv over a barrel when nv went back to TSMC]

Ultimately if TSMC capacity is limited and/or they can get a decent deal out of samsung, then i can see nv doing what they did with ampere - fab the silly money stuff [so GB100 or whatever the tippity top die gets called] on TSMC N3 or whatever, and then everything else [including geforce stuff for us plebs] on an older TSMC node or on samsung

 

That would be great for gamers. I wish they had stuck it out with Samsung tbh. Just seems they were not happy AMD managed to get close/ever so slightly ahead, and thus had to return to TSMC because pride.

 

Yeah but come on that was just down to what was going on in the world. AMD cards were the same sorta money too.

Now though? well my mate got a 12gb 3080 before they were all gone for £700 (Strix model too) which was actually below RRP and AMD cards now cost peanuts. I just got a 6900XT Toxic for £435.

 

Thats's fair, i've been bleeding money recently, inflation's inflation and the gpu market is so nuts i've completely forgotton what price anything should be.

£20 for a box of eggs, sure, seems like a good deal. I'll have two.

In theory it is a good idea to utilize the lanes that would otherwise go to waste.

But in practice if Asus charges any premium for the m.2 slot it will end up too close to the 7800 XT...
