    Hi guys,

Im after a new monitor now as i have recently moved house and dual monitors isn't feasible any more.(excuse to upgrade)

    I have 2x 21" 1920x1080 TN screens (nothing amazing is it !)

I'm after a bump up to quality so a good IPS screen with a minimum res of 1920x1080.

I currently run a i5 4670K with 7950 so i may need a GPU bump if i go with higher res. (not an issue)

ive been looking at the following

Dell 29" UltraSharp U2913WM 2560x1080 £359 (not sure on the 21:9 as ive heard of problems with games)

    Dell U2715H 27" QHD IPS 2560x1440 £407 (seems really steep !)

    Dell 25 Inch Widescreen U2515H QHD - 1920x1080 £254

    Dell UltraSharp U2414H 23.8"- 1920x1080 £194

there seems a big jump in price for the next res up on the dell.

I'm not limiting myself to Dell but I've seen so many people talk about them and recommend them that i thought it was a good place to start.

budget is ~£500 but i dont want to spend for the sake of spending. Ideally it will be wall mounted to free up desk space.

    thanks in advance

You don't mention budget, except to say it's open, but if it's wall mounted and not on the desk it may be further away than normal, so I'd go big.

Dell U3014. 16:10.. 2560x1600. Can be hardware calibrated if you want (with i1 Display Pro and Dell's software). Utterly brilliant. Around £750.

If you're not colour critical then the brilliant Dell U2711HM is a great choice. (The U2713H can be hardware calibrated.. the HM cannot).

If this is scarily expensive, then right at the other end is the Dell U2412M, which my wife uses and is utterly fantastic for the money. 16:10 1920x1200.

I've used all three screens and can vouch for them.

Will the monitor mainly be used for gaming, or do you do a lot of desktop work? Also, what sort of distance will you be from the screen?

    opps yeah

my main use for the PC is gaming - all game varieties plus normal web browsing etc - NO films etc

Id say id be between 50-80cm away from the monitor as the room is fairly small and will be on a wall mounted arm bracket above my desk (saves on space).

ill set a budget of £500 just so we have something to aim for :)

With my non-ASUS hat on, I'd say as much resolution as possible - at home I use 4K, but it's not for everyone. 2560*1440 / 2560*1600 are lovely, and Dell make some fantastic monitors. I have a pair of 2212HM monitors that have served me very well for a long time, albeit at 1080p.

If you're interested in Freesync / G-sync for gaming (and IMO it's well worth considering) that might move you away from Dell and more towards gaming-specific screens. But even then, I'd probably still go for IPS over TN if I could afford it.

im not focussed on dell i just know that they come highly recommended. Certainly dont mind other brands as along as the qaulity is there.

Freesync could be interesting i guess but id want it on an IPS monitor.

EDIT - quick look around basically shows that there isnt any that are good monitors in general.

Yes, it will probably take a little longer for the market to see a range of good IPS freesync / g-sync monitors, but I don't think it will be too long. Every time I've been looking at the comments on the G-sync gaming monitors, one of the most common pieces of feedback seems to be "we want IPS".

Loving the Dell 29" UltraSharp U2913WM 21:9 here, is fine with most games and there is added support with flawless widescreen. Even the few that don't support it it's just like playing on a 16:9 so you're not missing anything.

Well I'm surprised to see this - it's very high praise coming from somebody who uses a £2.5K Eizo daily!

I had thought about making the U3014 my next display because hardware calibration is now a deal maker for me (can't do without it) and I'd definitely prefer 30" over 27" because of the pixel pitch, however the more I read up about it - real-world customer reviews from long-term owners - I was forcibly reminded it's a Dell and it's not for professional image editing. I'd love to consider it because it's soooo cheap for a 30", but...it's a Dell. Are you familiar with the widespread firmware problem with the U3014? The QC is shocking, and so is Dell's warranty: if you have the "horizontal lines" problem, we'll happily replace your unit with...a refurbished screen that may or may not suffer from the same problem.

You get what you pay for, I suppose. I guess the TFT Central review left me pretty disappointed, seeing that with hardware calibration come some really tight limitations.

so after a day or so using my old 32" TV as my monitor - i think i prefer a larger screen :)

27"-30" i think should do it and a bump to either 2560x1080 or 2560x1440.

had a glance at the BenQ and i cant see why this is soooooo much cheaper than the Dell U2715H 27"

21.9 3440x1440 is quite nice, I went with a curved model and after a while I find it natural to use, expensive but if your prepared to wait I would guess prices will come down soon enough

How is the curved screen for watching movies from the other side of the room? (a big room)

most are ips but the Samsung is va which I went for because of backlight bleed with a lot of the ips, so far im quite happy with it after calibration as out of the box the image was not that good but now I have it pretty much spot on, as for the cost £780:jawdrop: hope the mrs doesn't find out

Another vote for the Dell 29" UltraSharp U2913WM here.

The 21:9 format seems to be steadily gaining popularity in recent times (there seems to be quite a few users on here with them now) although it is definitely still somewhat of a niche product.

So far as support for the res I haven't really encountered any problems, as Deders said, anything that isn't natively supported tends to get patched very quickly by the flawless widescreen community. You can head over to their website for the list of supported games and put in a request for anything that is missing.

All my recently played games: Star Citizen, Elite: Dangerous, Payday 2, Civ, Risk of Rain and Grow Home all support this res.

At the very least it's something a bit different.

How far back is that from? I'm wondering if the angle of the curve makes the corners harder to see from a distance.
