I am looking for a 24" Monitor for viewing movies and playing games on.

The review of the Benq FP241W has great reviews..but the contrast ratio is only 1000:1.

My Current monitor a Sony 19" SDM-E96D has a contrast ratio of 700:1.

Now the picture is very difficult to make out in dark scenes as the contrast ratio is not very high.

What makes this Benq any different? Is it any good for watching movies on especially in dark scenes?

Dark scenes will be governed more by quality of black depth. Your current model has a TN-Film panel in it, the technology behind it is fundamentally limited in how decent a black depth they can give you.

The FP241 uses a P-MVA panel, which gives much better black depth (as it uses a different type of LCD tech).

The FP241W was highly-regarded as being great for multimedia, the FP241W-Z might be worth watching out for if you're buying 2nd hand, as it has increased colour accuracy.

Contrast figures are a fairly meaningless figure really - a properly calibrated monitor, with a decent panel, even with fairly low contrast, will look better than a bad panel with amazing contrast. Obviously more contrast can be an advantage, but colour accuracy is more important imo.

Summary: Go for the 241, I would.

I don't know if you shop at NCIX.com at all, but I did notice a nice drop in the high-end products, including monitors (price war perhaps).
You may want to check it out for a possibility.

I am after a Full HD monitor 1080p. Although the HP monitor sounds good spec wise doesn't come under consideration.

One thing I noticed is that the Benq FP241W despite it being Full HD, the aspect ratio is 16:10, which would produce black bars on the top and bottom of the screen when watching movies.

So through some research I notice the Benq will release a new series of LCD monitors called the G-series.

The one I was looking at is the Benq G2411HD, which has an aspect ratio of 16:9, full screen display. The specs are pretty impressive.

So compared to the FP241W, what would you say?

I want to say go with some of NEC's multisyncs but the 24" doesn't seem to be that good. Although some of their other selections are top notch.

Poor viewing angles in the G series gives away it's TN panel, so the FP241 should still beat it to a pulp.

Pretty much ignore any DCR values (Dynamic Contrast Ratio) unless you like seeing the backlight shoot up and down.
