Recently, I've been plauged by an underclocking problem I can't shake loose. It's underclocking to the tune of ~700Mhz, and this ticks me off. GA-7n400 Pro 2 Rev 2.0 Barton 2500+, Superlocked 256Meg K-Byte PC2700 <--To be upgraded soon BFG MX4000 64Meg Video <--To be upgraded as well Maxtor U-ATA 60 Gig Hitachi U-ATA 60 Gig 54x32x54 CD-RW by Mitsumi RaidMAX 420W PSU +3.3/26A +5/32A +12/13A -5/.5A -12/.8A +5Vsb/2A I've got the dipswitches on the board that I despise set to 11x, since its Superlocked. This works fine, I think, because the barton runs at 1100Mhz. Now, the clock switch works fine set at 100, giving me my problem, but when I set it to Auto to boot it up to stock speed, I get errors. Random and frequent rebooting is the main error, frequent meaning, before entering OS. Also, invariably I will get the 5 beeps that the BIOS says is a processor error. Anyone have any clues? When I set it to Auto, I do make sure to set the FSB in the BIOS correctly, and it DOES run as a 2500... just not for long. EDIT: Thought I'd include also that when it boots as a 2500+, the PC Health tab in the BIOS reads roughly 30*C HIGHER than when its running at 1100... Also included my PSU.
Is your heatsink on good with some thermal goo? My first guess is its overheating and thats why it wont run at stock speed to good.
Could also be psu not giving enough juice to run at 2500+. Raidmax psus are awful . 13A on the +12 line isn't very sufficient. Have you got another psu around that you could test with? (even a 250w will do)
Yea, the sink is on there properly, but I think TMM is right about the gimped PSU. On my MSI board, when I ran at 2500, I think I was BEARLY running under the wire, and the nice, juicy features of the Gigabyte must be pushing it over the edge... Stupid RaidMAX and their crappy... crap... PSU.
Maybe try unplugging everything that isn't essential. If it works then, it's most likely a PSU problem. Although I can't really see how an insufficient PSU could cause a CPU to overheat.
who said it was overheating?. If the 12v line suddenly dipped sharply, it could have the affect of the system resetting, and the mobo beeping becuase it thinks theres a prob with the cpu.
I believe most bartons first boot at 1.1ghz (11*100). Just set the fsb to 166 and you'll be flying away at 1826mhz.
Oh yea, set that correctly. When its in Auto mode, like I want it to be, it runs correct speed, but the reset+die problem occurs, however, when it's running at the 100Mhz setting, which is the only way I can get it to run, it ignores the FSB setting in the BIOS.
yeh see ive changed it to 11*166 and it still posts on start up at 1100MHz, but in bios it says 1826....would help if i coudl get into windows as well, lol
My Barton 2500 is also running @ 1100Mhz, i just cba to change it. Is it true that it still runs at the speed of a 2500 ?
