Hardware ASUS Strix GeForce GTX 980 DirectCU II OC Review

If you must have a single gpu solution then the 980 is the card to buy. For most though they will take there chances with SLI and buy 2 970s for very similar money and 50-80% more performance depending on title.

 

Agreed ; think we need the guys to do a 970 sli vs R9 295x2

 

£660 gets a 295X2 vs £500 for 1 GTX 970

good game that as the 295X2 beats the 970SLI @4k for far less money

 

970 is £260 - 300, 980 is £425 - 500.

Which makes 2x 970 almost £100 less than R9 295x2

However the 290x has been dropping in price recently and can be had for pretty much the same price now as the 970, so it should be 2x 970 vs 2x R9 290x due to the very similar price.

 

oops was reading the review 980 when comparing prices .... ofc its all a `game` as NVidia had to play catch up when amd brought the 990 out etc .

 

I had to check the thermals on the R9 295x2 to make sure I wasn't seeing something drastically wrong in your report ... but as your review of that beast states, your thermals are based on the liquid temps in the watercooler, not the cpu itself.

Still, think about the fact that the R9 295x2 draws 300w more under load ... that's a lot of heat (being handled nicely by the cooler) but also a lot more power draw.
