I was going to buy one for my main rig (not overclocking) but decided that M.2 and SATA Express support was more future proof for me than all the (admittedly great) extra bells and whistles.

I saved myself some money by going to the Asus Z97M-Plus instead.

didn't the "old" Gryphon have the uprated audio?

    anyway, German pricing:

    • ASUS ROG Maximus VII Gene.........168€
    • ASUS Gryphon Z97 Armor edition...143€
    • ASUS Gryphon Z97.........................not available!
    • ASUS Sabertooth Z97....................133€
    • ASUS Z97M-Plus.............................110€

That's a thorough "Meh!" here, the Gryphon used to be the cheaper Sabertooth.

The "old" Z87 Gryphon uses the same ALC892 audio chipset as the "new" Z97.

Does anyone know if you can remove the armor around the cpu mosfet heatsinks seperatly from the rest of the armour?

Ive got the p67 sabertooth and in order to watercool it AND keep the armour i had to mod it.

The new armour since then looks tricky to mod so im hoping it can be removed seperatly!

I have the Z87 Gryphon and the armour is made of a single block, tou'll have to dremel it to fit MOSFET blocks.

As you can buy the Gryphon Armor Kit separately i would guess that you can.

Whoops that's for the Z87, not sure how much difference there is between that and the Z97.

EDIT: Just found this video that says the z87 armor kit is compatible with the Z97, and then goes on to say if you can still get the Z87 armor kit that it's compatible with the Z97 (non armor), so my guess is the armor is fully removable on the Z97 armor edition.

As GuilleAcoustic mentioned, it's the same with the Z97 which is currently sat in front of me - it's a single piece so you'd either have to mod it or remove it entirely if you want to water-cool the board.
