4GB. 2GB isn't much anymore. Vista uses around 900MB when you have around 2GB. If you can afford it, go with 8GB. If not, 4GB.
Video editing, require A LOT of power. Your setup will be a waist of money with XP. Video editing with 64-bit software will be greatly helpful, so to use 64-bit software, you need to unlock your CPU, and to do that, you need a 64-bit OS, like Vista 64-bit or Windows 7 64-bit. I suggest to find Vista 64-bit for free from university or college or work, else use WIn7 Release Candidate until it comes out. Win7RC has a few bugs but nothing killing the usage of the OS and your software, I have dual boot, and I use more Win7 than Vista (well it's to get used to it and testing my software, among a new tool I am working on beside Nv GPU Pro for computer enthusiasts ) Anyway, you need 4GB of RAM at minimum. I don't know about you, but I don't do video editing, and if I disable page file on my laptop that has 4GB of RAM, I get a lot of low memory when working or gaming. Moreover, video editing take quiet a lot of RAM when rendering, if I am not mistaken. Windows XP memory usage is anything but abysmal, as it's behavior was design for 128MB (yes, 0.1GB), and act as you are low in memory all the time, so despite having 2 GB of RAM, XP will put everything it can on the HDD. And that slows down everything. Also, Windows XP can only use 3.5GB of RAM maximum. if you put 4GB you'll use 3.1GB to 3.5GB (yes, less) of RAM depending on your system
well mostly editting video using sony vegas and adobe after effects and also some photoshop and also using camstia's 9
Yea, I did not want you to type what you said.... I skipped the line where you said video editing on the first post... Anyway, check put my post above.
You're going to use windows XP? That would be a complete waste. Yes, use an outdated operating system that doesn't know how to properly handle a multi-core processor. Brilliant waste of resources. My suggestion would use the Windows 7 RC, possibly Vista, if you don't want to reload by March 2010 after the initial installation. XP is really dated and is not worth putting on a personal machine unless there is a reason, like a program not working properly under Vista yet, etc. XP is nearly 8 years old, I think it's time to move on. That's just my opinion though. Edit: Yes, I know Vista uses a lot of resources. Okay, but there's roughly a 6 year gap between Vista & XP. There's roughly a 6 year gap between XP & '95. Can you run XP on a Pentium 1 166MHz processor, 64MB of EDO RAM, & a 2GB HDD? Windows 95 sure runs fine on it!!
When I do my video editing, I use DOS 6.0... the video appears in ASCII format, because I don't want to use my resources.
k now gettnig 64bit will be the hard part cuz im spending about another 300 on gpu and cpu cooler and case
Get Windows 7 RC 64-bit. It's free and expires in a year. The official, non-beta version comes out year end, from there you can buy it. It's kinda silly to buy Vista for less then 6 months.
ya but im 16 years old maxing like 20 bucks a week and 100 bucks a month along with it lol u relle think i can offard the new os
If you can't raise $300 in 12 months, I'm not sure the fast-changing and expensive world of enthusiast computing is one you want to get mixed up in...! Seriously. Use Windows 7 x64 now, and if you really can't afford 7 or Vista (or XP, which might still be on sale!) in a year, use Linux.
That's good an all, but you can also get Windows 7 for free. And you can keep it until March 2010. I would say either Vista x64 or Windows 7 RC x64. I personally suggest Windows 7. But it's your computer.
Well after installing, you'll notice that it won't activate because Windows only allows one copy of the license key to be active at the same time.
