what HD, i have a quantum fireball and there is a led on the thing itself, so it would just be a matter of saudering onto the led leads for me.

the mobo led connector will lite when accessing fron either of your drives, however some HDD do have LED connectors on them/led's i think seagate' shave a connector. an alternative is to get a controller card and plug your one drive in through that and then that can lite a separate led for that HDD.

my seagate has a HD activity led connector on the drive. it would just be a matter of installing another hd activity led in your case and wiring it up. I dont think most brands have that as an option :(

    which part don't you understand?

The HD activity led on the case will lite when there is any activity on any drive connected directly to the mobo, ie connected to any IDE channel on the mobo if it be raid (built in) or just standard ATA, PIO etc.

Seagates are the only drives i have seen with a built in led connector, be nice to know what other makes do. neither my IBM or fujitsu do.

    i have a plan

i think you could probably hook up a LED arrangemnt directly into the IDE cable, thinking about it you could probably just tap into two of the wires and use the signal from that to show when the drive is being used. i'm going to do a bit of investigating and see if i can work out how to make a 'Activity lite cable'.

i cant see it being a problem all it needs is a 40 pin past trought connector eg a bit of pcb with 2 x (2x20 pins) with a led across 2 of these pins to put in in parallel with the pins. conect to cable from the mobo to that then another cable from that to the HDD that way the cable wont be cut.
As i said i'm going to investigate it and see what happens.

but will the ide cable carry enough current for you to do this? and if it does, im pretty sure the signal would degrade being passes though a LED and all. lemme know how it turns out for oyu.

There is an "activity" wire (pin 39?) in the IDE cable, but IIRC it's the same wire for master & slave.

Have a look here for some ideas.

You could always use fbreoptics a-la Macroman from the LED on the hard disk itself leading out to whereever on the case you wanted your 2nd/3rd hdd lead.

An old quantum harddisk of mine had a built in activity led - fireball 2.1 GB jobby :)

hmmm its sad to say that in my place where i live Malaysia it's very difficult to get fibre optics........

Had that idea but just aint dont know where to get it :(

well I have an idea ....everyone knows removable hdd rack right?
those that can swapped to another pc the "mobile rack" has a hdd power on and a hdd activty led.

just wondering how to mod it without using its "removable function"

surely u must be able to get an optical digital cable like u connect minidiscs or portable cd players to the computer or two each other, some are cable and not optic but most are fibre - surely you could get that at your local hifi shop??

I think laptop IDE cables have 44 pins. Perhaps that's it. I recall the extras were power, so it seems a likely explanation.

i emailed IBM about it he said that it could probably be done through the mobo, but i tend to think he doesn't have a clue about moddin'.
