Does anyone know of a way of using the second HDD light on the Antec P182 chassis. It appears that a motherboard such as the assus P5K or P5Q has only one HDD light attachment point and it seems a shame to just ignore the other light especially if you intend to get two hard drives. I am thinking of building a pc hence this question:confused:.

Most decent hot swap drive trays have a HDD Access header on them, of course, at that point they usually have several other headers (Fan Fail, HDD Fail) and they have their own LEDs on the front. My current P182 rig (my server) is running the first HDD LED for the onboard matrix RAID (960GB RAID 5) and the other to a three bay HS tray with a 500GB RAID 5 off a HighPoint 1740 controller card that I connected to the 2nd header. my OS drive is in another drive bay with an LCD Temp display (also running off the HPT 1740).

Just so you know do NOT try this at home. HPT's RAID BIOS and Intel Matrix RAID BIOS are incompatible. I have NO idea why mine is working. I constructed the big array in the Matrix BIOS, then disabled it and constructed the smaller array in the HPT BIOS. I thought I lost the 2nd array, but when I booted into Server 03, voila. I wonder if maybe the Server 03 software RAID and Matrix RAID use the same boot configuration, thus now it's actually the OS calculating for RAID. (It's all host based RAID anyway, so that is acceptable). There is also an HPT IDE controller and an Adaptec SCSI controller in the same box (they were removed when I had troubles, they were not the cause). I hope you enjoyed my tale.

One thing to keep in mind if you choose to use the LCD trays is that there are two models. The xxxxxxx-1 models are compact (meaning they are 7in rather than 10in long, the P182 has a hard time fitting the non xxxxxxx-1 models) but the hard drives have to be screwed into the tray in order to function (there is no middle interface, just straight HDD to backplane. The normal models have a SATA female plug in the tray then connect using a pin interface, perfect for hotswaping (we use these in our recovery servers for quick interface). I have the big one, but it sticks out past the default optical drive placement in the P182 :(

I did not know that you could get replacement drive trays! This seems a good solution to try. I did enjoy your tale and I won't be trying that at home! Thankyou for the feedback.:)
