Hey all wondering what max power draw is on a sata 3.5 hdd, also if it uses 12v or 5v I read somewhere it uses both wondering what the power draw is on the 5v rail. Looking at the odroid x dev board http://www.hardkernel.com/renewal_2011/products/prdt_info.php?g_code=G133999328931. Thinking about buying one of these hdd enclosures http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=177_287_1265&products_id=16625 and after some modding put the dev board in one the hdd slot and power it off the sata port. The odroid x dev board needs 2a at 5v. Do able?:dremel:

They do use both 12V and 5V (I believe they're also wired for 3.3V, but don't typically use it.) You should be able to get at least the total power spec from the manual for any given drive. I don't know that anyone breaks it down by voltage, but I believe you'll be looking at something like 9 watts max in a typical 3.5", 7200 rpm drive.

Aside from that, seems like really what you're looking for is the spec for SATA power - the Wikipedia article only mentions that SATA power plugs use multiple pins since the individual pins can't carry enough on their own - up to 1.5A each. So, from that it seems possible that you could do what you want. But it seems like the place to start would be to hunt down the full spec for SATA and see what the max current draw is.

It sometimes has the current draw for 12v and 5v written on the hard drive label.

For example doing an image search on a WD5000AAKS drive it's 0.68A on the 5v and 0.55A on the 12v.

So that's 3.4W on the 5v and 6.6W on the 12v. These will be maximum values as well so expect these only on startup. General usage will be lower I'd expect.

Never thought of that dont think it will produce enough power on the 5v as I need 2 amp.:sigh:
