This is big news and no news at the same time. Essentially Frontier got tired of updating Elite to hit the moving target that was the Rift SDK and everyone had a whiney little panic that they were dropping VR support (apart from the people that were whining about the fact that they were supporting it because not everyone has a Rift). Frontier stated on numerous occasions that they would definitely support the Rift but bored people and drama queens spreading FUD began fussing about the fact that it might not happen.

Now its been confirmed and the whiners can finally go and find something else to whine about.

    /whine over.

Frontier's statements were never so clear-cut. It was always couched in the language of "we hope to support" and "we continue to work with Oculus", or even outright refusals like "there would need to be changes in the SDK for us to be able to support it.
    "
. A solid and simple statement of "we will support the Rift, but we won't be publicly releasing any further builds with updated beta SDKs" would have been welcome over the continued evasive statements.
When all Frontier put out were evasive non-statements and their public-facing action was a complete cessation of development for the Rift, it's hardly surprisingly people were fearing the worst even if hoping for the best. It's not like people have never been burned by "we'd like to support X later" that never amount to anything.
